Bladder cancer (BC) has a high recurrence rate, necessitating frequent monitoring. We herein present an innovative method for detecting BC-related miR-183 and miR-155 microRNAs using pH-responsive triplex DNA nanoswitches (TDNs). This approach employs a stepwise surface plasmon resonance biosensing platform (TDNs-SPR assay) to detect these two miRNAs sequentially.

Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) poses significant challenges due to its high recurrence rates and the difficulty in accurately distinguishing tumor lesions. Effective and economical methods for identifying cancerous tissues are urgently needed. In this study, we employed thiolated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with Evans blue (EB@HMSN(E)-SH), a traditional tumor staining dye, in conjunction with white light cystoscopy (WLC) to enhance the detection of bladder tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares a nephroscope-assisted single-trocar approach to traditional laparoscopic techniques for peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion, focusing on outcomes, complications, and costs from 511 patients over 15 years.
  • Results show that the nephroscopic method has a significantly longer median catheter survival (60.5 months vs. 43.1 months) and lower rates of peritonitis and exit site infections.
  • Additionally, the nephroscopic approach is more cost-effective, saving about $16,000 annually in medical expenses, and shows no difference in complication rates between the early and later phases of the learning curve.

Patients with high-risk prostate cancer after prostatectomy have a particularly high chance of being diagnosed with biochemical recurrence (BCR). Patients with BCR have a greater risk of disease progression and mortality. The present retrospective observational study aimed to clarify the risk factors for the BCR of prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy in patients with high-risk and very high-risk prostate cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of complete Radium-223 (Ra-223) treatment cycles on survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
  • The analysis included 42 patients, revealing that those who completed 5-6 Ra-223 cycles experienced significantly longer median overall survival (28.5 months) compared to those with less than 4 cycles (3.93 months).
  • Factors like the number of Ra-223 cycles and pre-treatment alkaline phosphatase levels were identified as important predictors for patient survival outcomes.

The characteristics of global prevalence and high recurrence of bladder cancer has led numerous efforts to develop new treatments. The spontaneous voiding and degradation of the chemodrug hamper the efficacy and effectiveness of intravesical chemotherapy following tumor resection. Herein, the externally thiolated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-SH(E)) is fabricated to serve as a platform for improved bladder intravesical therapy.

Background Previous studies, mainly from low- and middle-income settings, showed that pesticide self-poisonings were mostly impulsive with low levels of psychopathology. We aimed to investigate whether pesticide self-poisoning in a high-income country showed similar profiles, and whether those with certain characteristics and psychopathology were more likely to use specific pesticides. Methods Data were extracted from hospital records of pesticide self-poisoning patients treated at eight major hospitals in Taiwan between 2012 and 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how well the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) predicts survival in metastatic Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer (mCRPC) patients receiving docetaxel as their first treatment.
  • - Out of 170 patients analyzed, those with poor nutritional status (GNRI <92) had significantly shorter overall survival (11.07 months) compared to those with normal nutritional status (30.39 months).
  • - The research concluded that poor nutritional status, along with high metastatic volume and cumulative docetaxel dosage, are important independent factors that can affect overall survival in mCRPC patients.
