Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in captive wildlife species. However, CKD has been rarely documented in giant pandas.
Case Presentation: The following report describes a case of an eight-year-old female giant panda showing clinical signs of epistaxis, bloody diarrhea, polyuria, azotemia and anemia.
In dogs with acute myelopathy but showing multiple sites of spinal compression from intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) on imaging, one approach is surgical decompression of the single acute disc extrusion while ignoring other previously extruded or protruded discs. However, little is known regarding the outcomes of this approach. This study described the outcomes and investigated prognostic factors in 40 dogs with multiple sites of cervical disc extrusion or protrusion on MRI who underwent ventral slot decompression for the single acute disc.

Canine UC of the bladder is generally classified as papillary/nonpapillary and infiltrating/noninfiltrating with limited information regarding other histological patterns. Methods: To investigate the effect of SVI on the results obtained, 50 client-owned cats were included. Breath-by-breath analysis was conducted with BWBP software, and a commonly used rejection setting was chosen for automatic elimination (AE) of non-breath artefactual waveforms, according to tidal volume (TV), inspiratory and expiratory time, and the difference between inspiratory and expiratory volumes.
Canine mammary tumor (CMT) is the most common neoplasm in female dogs, and over 50% of CMTs are diagnosed as malignant. Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a member of the KLF family of transcription factors and is associated with cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. Although the role of KLF4 is still controversial in various human cancers, KLF4 has been identified as an oncogene in human breast cancer.

A 24-year-old, spayed female Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) in the Taipei Zoo (Taipei, Taiwan) showed clinical signs of slowly progressive anorexia, dullness, compulsive pacing, and circling. The animal subsequently developed acute severe stupor and persistent recumbency. View Article and Find Full Text PDFTaking advantage of the high sensitivity of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the cell-localizing ability of in situ hybridization (ISH), an indirect in situ PCR (ISPCR) method was developed for detecting the distribution of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded inguinal lymph nodes obtained from clinically healthy PCV2-carrier pigs and postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)-affected pigs. Comparisons of the relative sensitivity of indirect ISPCR with other routinely used diagnostic methods for PCV2 indicated that nested PCR was the most sensitive method followed by indirect ISPCR, conventional PCR, ISH, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Although indirect ISPCR, ISH, and IHC staining all revealed a similar signal distribution pattern of PCV2, using indirect ISPCR allowed specific amplification and detection of previously uneasily detected PCV2 signal than by routine ISH or IHC staining, particularly in those cells within the germinal center in clinically healthy PCV2-carrier pigs.
