Objective: Current adjustments of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may expose patients to risks of respiratory episodes or oxygen desaturation. Therefore, this study developed machine learning models using leading indicators, such as heart rate variability (HRV) and oximetry-related metrics, to proactively predict optimal adjustment timings.

Methods: CPAP titration data were first collected from a sleep center in northern Taiwan.

Objective: Mitochondria are essential for energy production and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, with changes in ROS levels or energy demands affecting mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy numbers, indicating mitochondrial function. Early life adversity (ELA) affects mitochondrial dynamics, influencing long-term health. Both ELA and mitochondrial abnormalities have been independently associated with bipolar disorder (BD).

We aimed to investigate whether early clinical indicators were associated with eventual disease severity, and to develop a predictive model for severe asparaginase-associated pancreatitis (AAP). Seventy-five acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) cases with AAP admitted to Shanghai Children's Medical Center from March 2013 to August 2023 were divided into non-severe (n = 44) and severe (n = 31) groups based on Atlanta diagnostic and AAP grading criteria. We compared essential information, asparaginase(ASP) dosage form, cumulative dose, clinical characteristics and laboratory tests between the groups.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cognitive difficulties in bipolar disorder (BD) may be linked to insulin resistance, which impacts metabolism and brain health; mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number is suggested as a potential marker for cognitive performance and treatment response.
  • - A study with 68 participants found that insulin resistance indirectly influences executive function through its effect on mtDNA copy number, with significant relationships identified in tasks measuring preservation errors and category completion on the Wisconsin card-sorting test (WCST).
  • - The findings indicate that lower mtDNA copy number, associated with higher insulin resistance, may lead to poorer cognitive functions in patients with euthymic BD; further research is needed to explore how improving metabolic health could enhance cognitive outcomes.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition with a complex pathophysiology involving neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and disruptions in neuronal and glial cell function. Microglia, the innate immune cells of the central nervous system, release inflammatory cytokines in response to pathological changes associated with MDD. Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) act as alarms, triggering microglial activation and subsequent inflammatory cytokine release.

Background: Asparaginase-associated pancreatitis (AAP) is a major challenge for continuing asparaginase therapy. We aimed to investigate the acute and long-term complications and survival rates related to first and second AAP episodes in Chinese children with haematological malignancies.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed clinical data of children with pancreatitis who received asparaginase chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), acute mixed cell leukaemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at Shanghai Children's Medical Center from November 2013 to November 2023.

Background: The effect of physical therapy on pain and disability alleviation in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) has been demonstrated, but the risk factors for treatment failure remain unknown.

Aim: To explore the associations of baseline demographic and clinical characteristics with treatment failure after physical therapy intervention for cLBP.

Design: A secondary analysis of a single-blind randomized clinical trial.

  • Filial piety is the respect and support children give to their parents, and it can be linked to feelings of depression in older Chinese people.
  • A study looked at how filial piety affects the relationship between lung health and depression in older men and women in Taiwan.
  • The findings showed that while older men with better lung function had less depression, for older women, feeling supported by family helped reduce their risk of depression, especially if their lung health was poor.

Objective: Although both partners of a married couple can have mental disorders, the concordant and cross-concordant categories of disorders in couples remain unclear. Using national psychiatric population-based data only from patients with mental disorders, we examined married couples with mental disorders to examine spousal concordance and cross-disorder concordance across the full spectrum of mental disorders.

Methods: Data from the 1997 to 2012 Taiwan Psychiatric Inpatient Medical Claims data set were used and a total of 662 married couples were obtained.

Aim: The inferior parietal lobule (IPL) plays important roles in reaching and grasping during hand movements, but how reorganizations of IPL subsystems underlie the paretic hand remains unclear. We aimed to explore whether specific IPL subsystems were disrupted and associated with hand performance after chronic stroke.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 65 patients who had chronic subcortical strokes and 40 healthy controls from China.

This study aimed to examine the institutionalization rate in patients with dementia in Taiwan, identify the predictors of institutionalization, and conduct a mediation analysis of caregiver burden between neuropsychiatric symptoms and institutionalization. We analyzed data from a retrospective cohort registered in dementia collaborative care ( = 518). The analyses applied univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression with Firth's penalized likelihood to assess the relationship between each predictor at entry and institutionalization for survival analysis.

Aim: To investigate the directional and selective disconnection of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) subregions in chronic stroke patients with hand dysfunction.

Methods: We mapped the resting-state fMRI effective connectivity (EC) patterns for seven SMC subregions in each hemisphere of 65 chronic stroke patients and 40 healthy participants and correlated these patterns with paretic hand performance.

Results: Compared with controls, patients demonstrated disrupted EC in the ipsilesional primary motor cortex_4p, ipsilesional primary somatosensory cortex_2 (PSC_2), and contralesional PSC_3a.

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is linked to cognitive impairment and mitochondrial dysfunction, with the study exploring the relationships between mitochondrial DNA copy number (MCN), treatment response to valproate (VPA), and cognitive function in BD patients.* -
  • Sixty euthymic BD patients and 66 healthy controls were analyzed, revealing higher MCN and metabolic syndrome indicators in BD patients compared to controls, alongside poorer cognitive performance measured by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST).* -
  • An MCN threshold of 2.05 was identified as a potential indicator for VPA treatment response, with higher MCN levels related to better cognitive performance and lower levels of inflammation and metabolic syndrome in BD patients.*

While most previous studies regarding patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) mainly focused on pain, disability, psychological damage, and intervention measures, the effect of CLBP on personal space remains unclear. The study aimed to assess the personal space of patients with CLBP and healthy controls, explored the differences between the two groups, and examined whether pain, dysfunction, anxiety, and depression affected the personal space regulation. The cross-sectional study recruited 24 patients with CLBP and 24 healthy controls at Shanghai Shangti Orthopedic Hospital and Shanghai University of Sport, Shanghai, China, from December 2018 to January 2019.

  • Agomelatine, an antidepressant, may pose a risk for liver damage, but the occurrence of acute hepatitis varies between clinical trials and real-world use.
  • The role of age and gender in increasing the likelihood of liver issues from agomelatine is unclear.
  • Three cases of older women developing acute hepatitis linked to agomelatine highlight the need for regular liver function checks for elderly patients on antidepressants.
