This study reports the finding of 3 ST8-t008-SCC IVa (2B) methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains in fresh cheese purchased within a single market in Costa Rica. In line with the finding of the resistance genes , , (C), and (A) in their genomes, these bacteria showed phenotypic resistance to multiple β-lactams and erythromycin. In addition, they carry genes for acquired resistance to aminoglycosides () and fosfomycin (), and genes for a myriad of virulence factors, including adhesins, hemolysins, and exotoxins.

Palatal brushing for the treatment of denture stomatitis: A multicentre randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of palatal brushing in the treatment of denture-related erythematous stomatitis (DES) in complete denture wearers.

Methods: This two-parallel-arm RCT was conducted in three university clinics in Brazil, Canada, and Chile. Participants (n=77) were randomly allocated to receive (i) instructions for palatal brushing and standard oral/denture hygiene ("intervention"); or (ii) standard oral/denture hygiene instructions only ("control").

The most common mutation occurs in BCSL2 which encodes seipin, a protein involved in adipogenesis. We report a patient with BSCL who was diagnosed with diabetes at 11 years old.

The roots were sectioned in slices from cervical, middle and apical root-reinforcement regions and analyzed by push out test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).

Preliminary In Vitro Study on O-Ring Wear in Mini-Implant-Retained Overdentures.

This preliminary in vitro study evaluated the simulated retention force of O-rings used for mini-implant overdenture treatment and the effect of mechanical fatigue corresponding to 6 months of wear. A mandibular overdenture analog device was attached to two mini-implants and underwent a tensile strength test before and after the application of insertion-removal and simulated masticatory cycles. Insertion-removal cycles led to a retention loss of 24%, whereas masticatory cycles did not influence retention.

In addition to an accumulation of iron, there is also an increased production of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) and inflammatory markers. These observations suggest that iron dyshomeostasis may be playing a key role in neurodegeneration.

Powdered milk is a frequently consumed product that does not need to be kept under cold conditions. Nevertheless, different microorganisms may contaminate it. Powdered milk is a highly consumed product by Costa Rican population, and Bacillus cereus is a potentially pathogenic bacteria associated to it, with the ability to develop toxins depending on the presence of the respective codifying genes.

Biological effects of soft denture reline materials on L929 cells in vitro.

Soft denture reline materials have been developed to help patients when their oral mucosa is damaged or affected due to ill-fitting dentures or post-implant surgery. Although reports have indicated that these materials leach monomers and other components that do affect their biocompatibility, there is little information on what cell molecules may be implicated in these material/tissue interactions. The biocompatibility of six soft liners (Ufi Gel P, Sofreliner S, Durabase Soft, Trusoft, Softone and Coe Comfort) was evaluated using a mouse fibroblast cell line, L929.

Knowledge of the functions of micronutrients has greatly increased, especially of Selenium (Se) that presents immunomodulatory and antitumor functions. The present study evaluated the health-related quality of life of patients undergoing chemotherapy for the treatment of leukemias and lymphomas (LL) and solid tumors (ST) while receiving Selenium (Se) supplementation.

Effect of light sources on the bond strength of resin material to thin-walled roots.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength to the dentin of an adhesive material used for root reinforcement light activated with different sources. Roots were divided into 4 groups (n=15) according to the light source used to activate the resin reinforcement: GI, non-weakened roots (control); GII, halogen light (H) 600 mW/cm²; GIII, LED 800 mW/cm² and GIV, LED 1500 mW/cm². The reinforcement was done with adhesive, composite resin and fiberglass posts.

The objective of this work was to determine some of the indicators associated to shelf life, hygiene, process and storage conditions for some of custard apple, mango and passion fruit pulps distributed by the main supermarket chains of the Metropolitan Area of San José, Costa Rica, as well as to examine the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes in them. Sixty fruit pulp samples were analyzed. Tests included pH determination, total aerobic plate count, yeasts and mold count, lactic bacteria count, total and fecal most probable number and the presence/absence of Listeria monocytogenes in 25 g of the product.
