Peptide YY (PYY) is an anorectic brain-gut pancreatic peptide that helps in feeding regulation by reducing appetite and is well characterized in mammals. The role of PYY in relation to brain is least studied in mammals as well as in lower vertebrates including fish, however high expression was evident in male reproductive tissue. In this regard, this study attempts to evaluate the significance of PYY in the brain of common carp, Cyprinus carpio.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe present study aimed to evaluate osmotic pump-mediated controlled release of estrogen in males and androgen in females to analyze the impact on gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH1), catecholamines (CAs) and other associated genes in the catfish, Clarias gariepinus. During pre-spawning phase, catfish were separately implanted osmotic pumps loaded with 17β-estradiol (E) in males and 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) in females at a dose of 10 μg/100 μl or saline (100 μl) controls into both sexes to release for 21 days and all fishes were maintained as per the duration. Further, GnRH1 expression levels were analysed in the discrete regions of brain after E and MT treatments in male and female catfish, respectively using qPCR which revealed that GnRH1 expression was significantly higher in E treated male as compared to the control.

Here, we present evidence in two species of honeybees, and , consistent with the lack of ability to transfer olfactory associative memory in a proboscis extension response (PER) associative conditioning paradigm, where the untrained antenna is blocked by an insulating coat. We show that the olfactory system on each side of the bee can learn and retrieve information independently and the retrieval using the antenna on the side contralateral to the trained one is not affected by the training.

In our study, we characterize this state by using the reliably inducible TI state of the grasshopper (Hieroglyphus banian) and by monitoring abdominal pulsations and body movements in response to visual and auditory stimuli. These pulsations are present during the TI and 'awake', standing states, but not in the CO2 anesthetized state.

Methodology/principal Findings: Present study was aimed to understand the importance of FTZ-F1 in relation to brain aromatase (cyp19a1b) during development, recrudescence and after human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) induction. Initially, we cloned FTZ-F1 from the brain of air-breathing catfish, Clarias gariepinus through degenerate primer RT-PCR and RACE.

Cytochrome P450 aromatase (cyp19) catalyzes the conversion of androgens into estrogens. Teleosts have distinct, ovarian specific (cyp19a1a) and brain specific (cyp19a1b) cyp19 genes.
