Background: Acceptance of pediatric liver transplantation (PLT) in this part of the world has been slow because of a number of considerations, including those of cost, infections, and the nonavailability of expertise. Despite several obstacles, PLT has seen impressive growth in the recent years. Against a backdrop of this changing landscape of PLT in India, we present our experience of performing 700 PLT over a period of 13 y.

Aim: We studied the usefulness of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging in identifying bile flow from hilar microbile ducts during Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE).

Materials And Methods: We reviewed the records of all the children who underwent KPE over 10 months and reviewed the operation notes of those who received ICG. ICG (0.

Introduction: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is caused by the deficiency of branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) and, it is well described that BCKAD contributed by an allograft following liver transplantation (LT) phenotypically normalizes this inborn error of metabolism (IEM). There is, however, a paucity of data especially with regards to the neurodevelopmental aspects and catch-up growth profiles after LT in a resource-challenged setting. We present our series of children under 6 years of age who underwent LT for MSUD particularly focusing on their amino acid homeostasis, neurodevelopmental and somatic growth profiles.

Background: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is a heterogenous group of inherited hepatocellular disorders and the clinical aspects, role of liver transplantation (LT), and its outcomes remain largely unelucidated. We present our data of LT for each type of PFIC and compare their early, and long-term outcomes, highlighting their individual differences and management strategies.

Methods: Prospectively collected data over a decade (2011-2022) of children with PFIC who underwent LT was analyzed.

Objective: To measure the reliability and reproducibility of a chest radiograph severity score (CSS) in prognosticating patient's severity of disease and outcomes at the time of disease presentation in the emergency department (ED) with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively studied 1275 consecutive RT-PCR confirmed COVID-19 adult patients presenting to ED from March 2020 through June 2020. Chest radiograph severity score was assessed for each patient by two blinded radiologists.

Background And Aims: Multimodal analgesia is used to treat severe postoperative pain (POP) in total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. Adjuvants are used with local anesthetics to improve the quality and duration of pain relief. Studies comparing different doses of dexmedetomidine in adductor canal block (ACB) are sparse to date.

Background: APOLT has been proposed as a treatment modality for certain types of NCMLD. While the short-term outcomes of this operation have been comparable with orthotopic LT, its long-term outcomes have sparsely been reported. We present one such case of Citrullinemia type I who underwent APOLT and developed recurrent PS.

Objectives: To study the implementation of ERAS (Enhanced recovery after surgery) pathway and its effect on duration of post-operative hospital stay and various phases of post-operative care in comparison with conventional care group.

Materials And Method: Prospective study conducted in Amrita institute of medical sciences, Kochi, Kerala. Women planned for elective and scheduled caesarean section were included in the study from September 2020 to October 2020 and compared with women who underwent caesarean section in the same period receiving standard perioperative care.

One area of health care delivery that has been affected badly in most of the institutions is the running of the surgical services. This is due to various factors such as the presence of asymptomatic carrier stage, increased morbidity and mortality in surgical procedures in a COVID-19 patient, and possible transmission of disease to the health care workers (HCWs). A guideline was formulated in our institution, which is a tertiary care university teaching hospital to resume the surgical activities in full.

Background And Objectives: Resistance to methicillin in methicillin resistant strains of (MRSA) is due to the presence of gene, which encodes a low affinity penicillin binding protein (PBP)-2a or PBP2. Accurate and rapid identification of MRSA in clinical specimens is essential for timely decision on effective treatment. The aim of the study was to compare three different methods for detection of MRSA namely cefoxitin disc diffusion, CHROM agar MRSA and VITEK-2 susceptibility with PCR which is the gold standard reference method and to find the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of these isolates by VITEK-2.

Background And Objectives: Hepatitis C is the most common hepatotropic viral infection that affects patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Most of the laboratories in India depend on HCV antibody detection by ELISA. PCR based studies on detection of HCV RNA among haemodialysis patients are very scanty in India.

Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI) accounts for 15-20% of colorectal cancer (CRC) and is considered to have favorable stage-adjusted prognosis compared to Microsatellite stable (MSS) CRCs. Determination of MSI in stage II CRC is important for management decisions regarding adjuvant chemotherapy administration. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic and predictive significance of MSI in stage 2 CRC in the Indian scenario.

Introduction: Needle-stick injury (NSI) is one of the most potential hazards for health care workers. They pose a significant risk of occupational transmission of blood-borne pathogens. The present study was done to determine the incidence of NSI among interns and nurses; their knowledge, attitude, and preventive strategies undertaken by the respondents after NSI.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the impact of female gender on early outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), highlighting that being female is considered a risk factor for morbidity and mortality.
  • It involves a retrospective analysis of 773 patients, 132 of whom were females, finding that early mortality rates were similar between genders, but females experienced higher rates of complications like mediastinitis and hospital readmissions.
  • The findings indicate that while early mortality was comparable, female patients faced more challenges post-surgery, emphasizing the need for specialized care for this demographic.

Demonstration of monoclonal immunoglobulin molecule in serum forms the mainstay in the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathies. The major tests that help in this regard are serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), serum immunofixation electrophoresis (sIFE) and serum free light chain assay (sFLC). Our objectives were to study the accuracy of sFLC and sIFE in the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathies and also to study the role of combination of SPEP + sIFE + sFLC in the diagnosis of the same.

Background And Objectives: Dengue and Leptospirosis were often discussed separately with rash being more common in dengue and jaundice in leptospirosis. But with increasing reports of co-infection, the situation has become worse. The main objective of this study was to look for the presence of both Dengue and Leptospira IgM antibodies in serum samples of patients, presenting with acute febrile illness.

Background: Patients undergoing corrective surgery for scoliosis may require postoperative ventilation for various reasons.

Aim: The aim was to study the correlation of preoperative (pulmonary function test [PFT], etiology, and Cobb's angle) and intraoperative factors (type of surgery, number of spinal segments involved, blood transfusion, and temperature at the end of surgery) on postoperative ventilation following scoliosis surgery.

Settings And Design: patients' medical records of scoliosis surgery at a tertiary care center during 2010-2016 were retrospectively analyzed.
