In this work, we used the rigid tetrapodal organic linker, [1,1'-biphenyl]-3,3',5,5'-tetrayltetrakis(phosphonic acid) (Hbtp), for the preparation of two lanthanide-organic framework families of compounds: layered [Ln(Hbtp)(Hbtp)(Hbtp)(HO)]∙23.5HO∙MeOH [where Ln = Eu () and Gd ()], prepared using microwave-irradiation followed by slow evaporation; 3D [Ln(Hbtp)(Hbtp)(Hbtp)(HO)]∙3HO [where Ln = Ce (), Pr (), and Nd ()], obtained from conventional hydro(solvo)thermal synthesis. It is shown that in this system, by carefully selecting the synthetic method and the metal centers, one can increase the dimensionality of the materials, also increasing structural robustness (particularly to the release of the various solvent molecules).

A new class of dual fluorescent chemosensors for nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) based on phosphonated pyrene derivatives is reported, showing high selectivity towards trinitrotoluene (TNT). The strong intermolecular interactions (π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding) allow high fluorescence quenching with visual detection in short response times.

A rapid, mild and high-yield microwave synthesis of 1D isotypical [Ln(H4bmt)(H5bmt)(H2O)2]·3H2O coordination polymers is presented. The La(3+)-based material is highly active as a heterogeneous catalyst in the methanolysis of styrene oxide at nearly room temperature. Eu(3+)- and Tb(3+)-doped materials are very effective UV-to-visible light converters.
