Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) is characterized by the persistence of one or more symptoms after the acute phase, leading to physical disabilities. This study aims to investigate whether the functional capacity and respiratory function 120 days post-COVID-19 differed according to the level of respiratory support needed during hospitalization in acute COVID-19 in the pre-vaccine rollout period. We followed up with 118 COVID-19 hospitalized patients in the acute phase until 120 days post-acute disease, with patients split into a Non-Invasive Oxygen Therapy Group (OTG, n = 72), Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Group (IMV, n = 12), and Room Air Group (RAG, n = 34), assessing the body composition, respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, functional capacity, and muscle strength at the follow-up visit.

Purpose: Brown-McLean syndrome (BMS) is a clinical condition characterized by peripheral corneal edema with central corneal transparency. This study aims to document the tomographic and biomechanical characteristics of 3 patients with typical BMS features using the Pentacam® AXL and CORVIS ST® (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany).
Observations: Three cases of BMS are presented.

Introduction: The purpose of this clinical report was to describe an unprecedented case of bilateral pressure-induced stromal keratopathy (PISK) following corneal photorefractive keratectomy, associated with presumed herpetic keratitis, and to present tomographic and biomechanical findings before and after appropriate treatment.
Case Presentation: A 33-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic with suspected delayed corneal epithelial healing 3 weeks after an uncomplicated PRK. A central layer of corneal opacity with a presumed fluid-filled interface area was observed upon slit lamp biomicroscopy.

Species of the genus Acanthamoeba are free-living protozoans that occasionally act as parasites, causing a severe, progressive corneal infection termed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). The variable pathogenic potential among Acanthamoeba lineages has been shown by in vitro assays, but little is known about the behavior of different strains in animal models of AK. This work aimed to evaluate the infectivity of Acanthamoeba from distinct morphological groups and genotypes in a rat model of AK and apply an immunohistochemical technique for histological characterization of the lesions.

Glaucoma is a chronic optic neuropathy characterized by irreversible damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), resulting in changes in the visual field (VC). Glaucoma screening is performed through a complete ophthalmological examination, using images of the optic papilla obtained in vivo for the evaluation of glaucomatous characteristics, eye pressure, and visual field. Identifying the glaucomatous papilla is quite important, as optical papillary images are considered the gold standard for tracking.

The investigation of the crude extract of leaves and bark of Pilocarpus pennatifolius Lemaire allowed isolated of a not yet described coumarin, together with three known coumarins (bergapten, xanthotoxin and dimethyl allyl xanthyletin), and a not yet described imidazole alkaloid. All structures were established by means of spectral analysis, including extensive 2D NMR studies. In addition, the alkaloid had its absolute stereochemistry determined by X-ray diffraction.

Extraction and characterization of natural products from the bark of the trunk of Helietta apiculata Benth (Rutaceae) afforded nine alkaloids, eight furoquinoline and one quinolone, limonine, three cinnamic acid derivatives, three neolignans, tetracosanoic acid, six coumarins, of which apiculin A and apiculin B (neolignans), and tanizin (coumarin) are previously undescribed compounds. The structures of all compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods, and the crystal structures of two of the newly undescribed compounds, apiculin A and apiculin B, were determined by X-ray analysis. Extracts and pure compounds isolated from Helietta apiculata showed promising antimicrobial activities.
