Background: Female sex is a well-recognized risk factor for long QT syndrome and torsades de pointes (TdP), likely reflecting the influence of sex hormones on ventricular repolarization. Overall, estradiol prolongs, whereas progesterone and testosterone shorten, heart rate-corrected QT interval. However, no studies have comprehensively evaluated sex hormone levels in male and female long QT syndrome patients developing TdP, nor their implications in terms of clinical outcomes and electrophysiological changes.

The glycoprotein CD47 is an innate immune checkpoint ubiquitously expressed on all healthy cells to prevent themselves from phagocytosis. CD47 binds to its receptor SIRPα on macrophages, thus producing a signal transduction cascade which inhibits phagocytosis. CD47 is overexpressed on various solid and hematologic malignancies in order to escape the immune system.

: Facial lesions, including lentigo maligna and lentigo maligna melanoma (LM/LMM), both malignant, present significant diagnostic challenges due to their clinical similarity to benign conditions. Although standard dermoscopy is a well-established tool for diagnosis, its inability to reveal cellular-level details highlights the necessity of new magnified techniques. This study aimed to assess the role of standard dermoscopy, high-magnification dermoscopy, and fluorescence-advanced videodermatoscopy (FAV) in diagnosing LM/LMM and differentiating them from benign facial lesions.

Aims: ultrasound (US) diagnosis of enthesitis is burdened of low specificity, especially when it is performed in patients with psoriasis (PsO) but without clinical psoriatic arthritis (PsA), because of mechanical, dysmetabolic and age-related concurrent enthesopatic changes. We propose a novel US score to quantify the cortical-entheseal bone remodeling burden of several peripheral entheses, aiming to improve the specificity of US for PsA-related enthesitis, and to evaluate its diagnostic value in PsO patients with subsequent diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis (PsO/PsA).

Methods: clinical and US data of 119 consecutive patients with moderate/severe PsO and nonspecific musculoskeletal symptoms, were included in this retrospective study.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D deficiency is a significant public health issue in Europe, affecting not just the elderly but also those aged 50-70 years across both genders.
  • A recent survey involving 870 subjects in Italy found that dietary vitamin D intake was alarmingly low, with average daily intakes of 5.05 μg for females and 6.25 μg for males, which is below the recommended average.
  • The data revealed a trend where vitamin D intake decreases with age, indicating that older adults are particularly at risk for potential hypovitaminosis due to inadequate dietary consumption.
