Sustainable land management in Mediterranean agroecosystems is crucial for preserving soil health, optimizing water use efficiency, and ensuring crop productivity under increasing climate extremes and prolonged drought periods. In this research, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) coupled with response surface methodology was used to identify the optimal process parameters (temperature, time, and solvent composition (ethanol-water ratio)) for bioactive compounds extraction from stalks and debranning products. Extraction efficiency was assessed in terms of total phenolic compounds (TPCs) and antioxidant activity (AA), and phenolic profiles were identified using HPLC-DAD for the four samples of byproducts (two samples from stalks, C1 and C2, and two samples for debranning products, C3 and C4, from two different farms). The optimized extract containing the highest amount of TPC at different levels was used to enrich bread to evaluate the ability of extending their shelf life using a hyperspectral imaging device (935-1720 nm).

Aim of this study was to compare the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of three commercial potato varieties cultivated upland, Kennebec, Desirée, and Bleuet, whose extracts,   based on chemical analyses, were considered chlorogenic acid (CGA)-, carotenoid-, and anthocyanin-rich, respectively. To this aim, THP-1-derived macrophages were pretreated with extracts and then challenged with LPS. While at supraphysiological doses (50 µM), all three extracts significantly counteracted LPS-induced TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, at more physiologically relevant doses (1-5 µM), only Desirée and Bleuet showed anti-inflammatory activity.

A syndrome called "Kiwifruit Decline Syndrome" (KiDS) affects kiwifruit in several Mediterranean areas, causing growth arrest and wilt that rapidly progress to desiccation, scarce root growth, absence of fibrous roots, brown soft-rotting areas, and cortical detachment from the central cylinder. The origin is considered multifactorial, and a correlation with hydraulic conductance impairment caused by a high vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and temperature was detected. Perennial grains, which remain productive for multiple years, rather than growing for only one season before harvest, have deep, dense root systems that can support a richness of beneficial microorganisms, which are mostly underexplored. In this work we isolated forty-three bacterial strains associated with the rhizosphere of the OK72 perennial wheat line, developed from a cross between winter common wheat and Thinopyrum ponticum. Identified using 16S rDNA sequencing, these bacteria were assessed for plant growth-promoting traits such as indole-3-acetic acid, siderophores and ACC-deaminase acid production, biofilm formation, and the ability to solubilize phosphate and proteins.
