Fibers with diameters in the lower micrometer range have unique properties suitable for applications in the textile and biomedical industries. Such fibers are usually produced by solution electrospinning, but this process is environmentally harmful because it requires the use of toxic solvents. Melt electrospinning is a sustainable alternative but the high viscosity and low electrical conductivity of molten polymers produce thicker fibers.

Melt electrospinning is a simple, versatile, and widely used technique for the production of microfibers and sub-microfibers. Polybutylene succinate (PBS) is a promising raw material for the preparation of melt-electrospun fibers at the laboratory scale. The inclusion of additives in the PBS melt can reduce the final fiber diameter, but economically feasible larger-scale processes remain challenging.

A reusable support system for the immobilization of lipases is developed using hybrid polymer-inorganic core shell nanoparticles. The biocatalyst core consists of a silica nanoparticle. Background: Polyesters with pendant hydroxyl groups are attractive materials which offer additional functionalization points in the polymer chain. In contrast to chemical polycondensation, lipase regioselectivity enables the synthesis of these materials as certain hydroxyl groups remain unaffected during the enzymatic process.

The article presented concerns the application of fluorescein as a fluorescent material for anti-counterfeiting technology which will allow the labeling and identification of legitimate articles in the textile field. Fluorescein has been applied to polyester fabrics by microwave irradiation technique in the presence of a UV absorber. Thus, its presence in the textile substrate is detectable following an excitation at a specific wavelength belonging to the Ultra-violet zone, which makes this material very effective for tracking and detecting counterfeit articles.

Different cyanines absorbing in the NIR between 750 and 930 nm were applied to study the efficiency of both radical and cationic polymerization in combination with diaryliodonium salt. Variation of the connecting methine chain and structure of the terminal indolium moiety provided a deeper insight in the structure of the cyanine NIR-sensitizer and the efficiency to generate initiating radicals and conjugate acid. Photophysical studies were pursued by fluorescence spectroscopy providing a deeper understanding regarding the lifetime of the excited state and contribution of nonradiative deactivation resulting in generation of additional heat in the polymerization process.
