The aim of this study was to quantify the parameters of root uptake of radioiodine by agricultural crops under steady state conditions depending on the main soil characteristics. For this purpose, a long-term (483-days) pot experiment was conducted under natural conditions in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone to grow radish in soils of four different types with added isotope I. The experiment demonstrated an increase in root uptake of radioiodine by radish roots in the following sequence of soil types: clay soil < loam soil ≪ sandy soil (Chernozem ≈ Phaeozem < Greyzem ≪ Podzoluvisol).

High-grade glioma (HGG) is associated with several external and internal stressors that may induce mood alterations at all stages of the disease. Symptoms of depression and anxiety in persons with glioma have multifactorial etiology and require active follow-up. We reviewed the literature data on the prevalence, mechanisms likely involved in the etiology of mood alterations in persons with HGG and psychosocial interventions found beneficial in treating these symptoms.

This article summarizes a Symposium on 'Radiation risks of the central nervous system' held virtually at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Radiation Research Society, 3-6 October 2021. Repeated low-dose radiation exposure over a certain period could lead to reduced neuronal proliferation, altered neurogenesis, neuroinflammation and various neurological complications, including psychological consequences, necessitating further research in these areas. Purpose: The Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework, a systematic tool that can link available mechanistic data with phenotypic outcomes of relevance to regulatory decision-making, is being explored in areas related to radiation risk assessment. To examine the challenges including the use of AOPs to support the radiation protection community, an international horizon-style exercise was initiated through the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency High-Level Group on Low Dose Research Radiation/Chemical AOP Joint Topical Group. The objective of the HSE was to facilitate the collection of ideas from a range of experts, to short-list a set of priority research questions that could, if answered, improve the description of the radiation dose-response relationship for low dose/dose-rate exposures, as well as reduce uncertainties in estimating the risk of developing adverse health outcomes following such exposures.

Purpose: The concept of the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) has recently gained significant attention as to its potential for incorporation of mechanistic biological information into the assessment of adverse health outcomes following ionizing radiation (IR) exposure. This work is an account of the activities of an international expert group formed specifically to develop an AOP for IR-induced leukemia. Group discussions were held during dedicated sessions at the international AOP workshop jointly organized by the MELODI (Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Initiative) and the ALLIANCE (European Radioecology Alliance) associations to consolidate knowledge into a number of biological key events causally linked by key event relationships and connecting a molecular initiating event with the adverse outcome.

Background: Despite reductions in exposure for workers and the general public, radon remains a leading cause of lung cancer. Prior studies of underground miners depended heavily upon information on deaths among miners employed in the early years of mine operations when exposures were high and tended to be poorly estimated.

Objectives: To strengthen the basis for radiation protection, we report on the follow-up of workers employed in the later periods of mine operations for whom we have more accurate exposure information and for whom exposures tended to be accrued at intensities that are more comparable to contemporary settings.

Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the ability of magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) of the lumbo-sacral plexus (LSP) to distinguish patients with hereditary transthyretin-related amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) from asymptomatic variant carriers (AVC) and healthy controls and to assess its prognostic value.

Methods: Three-Tesla MRN was performed in 25 consecutive ATTRv-PN patients, 18 AVC, and 10 controls including T2-w DIXON and DWI MR sequences. Two blinded readers independently assessed LSP root diameter and intraneural signal on the MRN images of each subject.

Background: Transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ) can limit the efficacy of cancer treatments, including radiotherapy (RT), by inducing an immunosuppressive tumor environment. The association of TGFβ with impaired T cell infiltration and antitumor immunity is known, but the mechanisms by which TGFβ participates in immune cell exclusion and limits the efficacy of antitumor therapies warrant further investigations.

Methods: We used the clinically relevant TGFβ receptor 2 (TGFβR2)-neutralizing antibody MT1 and the small molecule TGFβR1 inhibitor LY3200882 and evaluated their efficacy in combination with RT against murine orthotopic models of head and neck and lung cancer.
