Increasing drought pressure under anthropogenic climate change may jeopardize the potential of tropical forests to capture carbon in woody biomass and act as a long-term carbon dioxide sink. To evaluate this risk, we assessed drought impacts in 483 tree-ring chronologies from across the tropics and found an overall modest stem growth decline (2.5% with a 95% confidence interval of 2.

Substantial evidence indicates that breastfeeding reduces mortality and morbidity in in-fants. However, social changes in the 20th century resulted in a considerable decline in breastfeed-ing rates in many countries. Breast milk is crucial because of its nutritional, immunological, and emotional benefits and economic value.

The data generated in nearly 30 years of bacterial genome sequencing has revealed the abundance of transposable elements (TE) and their importance in genome and transcript remodeling through the mediation of DNA insertions and deletions, structural rearrangements, and regulation of gene expression. Furthermore, what we have learned from studying transposition mechanisms and their regulation in bacterial TE is fundamental to our current understanding of TE in other organisms because much of what has been observed in bacteria is conserved in all domains of life. However, unlike eukaryotic TE, prokaryotic TE sequester and transmit important classes of genes that impact host fitness, such as resistance to antibiotics and heavy metals and virulence factors affecting animals and plants, among other acquired traits.

The Anaplasmataceae family includes obligate, arthropod-transmitted intracellular bacteria that can be zoonotic and potentially fatal. Studies focusing on the interaction between neotropical primates and the agents of this family are scarce. The present study aimed to identify agents of the Anaplasmataceae family in the whole blood of free-living and captive neotropical primates in the State of Mato Grosso, Central-West Brazil.

Mercury is a non-essential and toxic metal that induces toxicity in most organisms, but endophytic fungi can develop survival strategies to tolerate and respond to metal contaminants and other environmental stressors. The present study demonstrated the potential of mercury-resistant endophytic fungi in phytoremediation. We examined the functional traits involved in plant growth promotion, phytotoxicity mitigation, and mercury phytoremediation in seven fungi strains.

Aging is a natural process of organism deterioration, which possibly impairs multiple physiological functions. These harmful effects are linked to an accumulation of somatic mutations, oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation, protein damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction. It is known that these factors are capable of inducing telomere shortening, as well as intestinal dysbiosis.

To further explore the structural features and potential antibacterial and antitumor activities of polynuclear Cu coordination compounds with nalidixic acid (nx) derivatives, new complexes bearing nx hydrazones with N-pyridinyl moieties substituted at positions 2 and 3 (h2py and h3py) were synthesized. Complexes [Cu(CHNO)(CHNO)(HO)]4BF∙HO (1), and [Cu(CHNO)(CHNO)(HO)]4BF∙3HO (%) (2) were synthesized using h2py and h3py with Cu(BF)∙nHO as precursor, whereas the [Cu(CHNO)Cl]∙0.5HO complex (3) was synthesized with h2py and CuCl∙2HO.

AIRmax and AIRmin mice strains were selected according to the intensity of their acute inflammatory responsiveness. Previous studies have shown that AIR mice differ in their resistance to chemically induced skin tumors and in the development of melanoma metastases, in addition to differences in neutrophil and NK cells activity. In the present work, we aimed to evaluate whether the difference of susceptibility to murine melanoma is associated with NK cytotoxic activity against Yac.

Background And Purpose: Mitochondria play a central role in the host response to viral infection and immunity, being key to antiviral signaling and exacerbating inflammatory processes. Mitochondria and Toll-like receptor (TLR) have been suggested as potential targets in SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the involvement of TLR9 in SARS-Cov-2-induced endothelial dysfunction and potential contribution to cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 have not been demonstrated.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of pancreatic beta cells through cell injury caused primarily by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8). The pathophysiological basis of T1DM seems to be an imbalance between a reduced function of T regulatory lymphocytes and an increased inflammatory activity of Th17 lymphocytes caused by increased production of inflammatory cytokines, as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17 and IFN-gamma due to environmental factors and genetic predisposition. The preservation of the reserve of beta cells in new-onset T1DM and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) by immunomodulation in addition to the incretin effect seems to be possible with an association of DPP-4 inhibitors and vitamin D3.
