Periodontitis (PD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontium with a high prevalence and is considered a potential risk factor for the development of other diseases. These include viral infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, including those caused by the family, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C and B viruses, influenza virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which have been identified with greater frequency in patients with PD. The underlying molecular mechanisms that underpin this comorbidity remain to be elucidated; however, the compromised capacity of the oral mucosa-associated antiviral response is a plausible explanation.

Primary care often serves as a routine point of contact for patients following MBS and is a potential gateway for addressing and/or preventing recurrent weight gain.
Methods: Although guidelines for the management of recurrent weight gain after MBS exist, this narrative review was undertaken to clarify the role of the primary care providers in enhancing long-term outcomes and preventing weight gain after MBS.

Black individuals are at greater risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases compared to White individuals. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation has been identified as a significant risk factor contributing to racial disparities in cardiovascular disease, yet systematic racial differences that affect the measurement of ANS activity among White and Black participants are likely obscuring understanding about ANS-health disparity links. Moreover, sex differences in ANS activity have been observed.

Fear engenders a vast array of autonomic responses in organisms, which are elicited by the presence of threat. Among these responses, heart rate is influenced by the presence of dangerous events as well but can be modulated based on environmental and internal circumstances. This process, while present across different species, may be subtended by partially different neural mechanisms.
