Background: Occult papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) refers to the PTC accidentally found due to its occult lesions. Classic, as the most common subtype of PTC, is usually considered to have a low degree of malignancy and a favorable prognosis. Currently, the American Thyroid Association Management Guidelines adopted active surveillance (AS) as an alternative to immediate surgery in some low-risk PTC patients with less than 1 cm in diameter.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a challenging public health problem which successful treatment depends on the stage at diagnosis. Recently, CRC-specific microbiome signatures have been proposed as a marker for CRC detection. Since many countries have initiated CRC screening programs, it would be useful to analyze the microbiome in the samples collected in fecal immunochemical test (FIT) tubes for fecal occult blood testing.

Comparison of Fecal Collection Methods on Variation in Gut Metagenomics and Untargeted Metabolomics.

State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering School of Life Sciences, Human Phenome Institute, Fudan Universitygrid.8547.e, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how different fecal collection methods affect metagenomics and metabolomics in understanding gut microbe-human interactions, using six collection methods on samples from healthy volunteers.
  • - Most collection methods (OMNIgene Gut, FOBT cards, RNAlater, and Microlution) showed high reliability for gut metagenomic studies, while 95% ethanol excelled in preserving metabolite profiles.
  • - The findings suggest that using separate methods for metagenomic sequencing and metabolomic profiling is crucial for accurate results in large-scale research on gut microbiomes.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is an accepted method of fertility preservation. However, OTC is not standardized and many variations exist in the freezing strategy, tissue processing, and surgical approach. In this pilot study, we used a sheep model to compare slow freezing versus vitrification techniques, as well as the feasibility of processing ovarian tissue into a hyaluronan suspension of small ovarian units.
