Article Abstract

The current agricultural system faces the critical challenge of providing sustenance to the global population. There is a deep concern about the huge food demand and security driven by the burgeoning global population. Further, urbanization and modernization lead to a significant reduction in arable land, subsequently hindering crop production. This situation is further strangled as agriculture is highly vulnerable to several abiotic and biotic stresses. Paradoxically, excessive chemical fertilizer usage leads to soil infertility and micronutrient deficiencies and impacts human health. Selenium (Se), an essential micronutrient, plays a crucial role in human health and its deficiency can result in adverse health effects. While the necessity of Se in plants remains ambiguous, optimal levels can yield beneficial effects. The bioavailable Se content in the naturally occurring food source is limited. Since plants are the primary food source for animals and humans, enhancing the Se content through biofortification offers a viable solution. Agronomic approach demonstrates considerable promising results, particularly the use of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and microbial biofortification utilizing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). In conclusion, this review emphasizes the holistic framework of Se utilization and management of excess levels to develop a resilient and nutritionally balanced food to address hidden hunger, i.e., gunfight.

Background: Between November 2023 and March 2024, coastal Kenya experienced another wave of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections detected through our continued genomic surveillance. Herein, we report the clinical and genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infections from 179 individuals (a total of 185 positive samples) residing in the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS) area (~ 900 km).

Medical cannabis legalization and the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

Amidst the global shift toward cannabis legalization, this study examines medical cannabis (MC) sales as an indicator of economic activity and innovation. It explores associations between MC sales, and variables including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis prevalence, and gross domestic product (GDP), using a fixed effects (FE) panel regression model. It also evaluates associations between cannabis legalization and MC sales over time using a dynamic Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach with multiple time periods.

Background: Little is documented on key community-based One Health (OH) approach implementation, pro-activeness and effectiveness of interactions and strategies against Mpox outbreak public health emergency in international concern (PHEIC) in various African countries in order to stamp out the persisting Mpox outbreak threat and burden. Prioritizing critical community-based interventions and lessons learned from previous COVID-19, Mpox, Ebola, COVID-19, Rift Valley Fever and Marburg virus outbreaks revealed critical shortcomings in funding, surveillance, and community engagement that plague public health initiatives across the continent. Background: Rare genetic variation provided by whole genome sequence datasets has been relatively less explored for its contributions to human traits. Meta-analysis of sequencing data offers advantages by integrating larger sample sizes from diverse cohorts, thereby increasing the likelihood of discovering novel insights into complex traits. Furthermore, emerging methods in genome-wide rare variant association testing further improve power and interpretability.
