Hazardous environmental factors contribute to various irreversible threats to human health worldwide. Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 µm (PM) plays a critical role in lung carcinogenesis. Previously, we reported that 1,2-naphthoquinone (1,2-NQ), a component of atmospheric PM and diesel exhaust particles, forms a covalent bond with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) via protein N-arylation, thereby activating the downstream protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway. Here, we elucidate a regulatory mechanism by which 1,2-NQ modulates the migratory activity of human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. Specifically, exposure of A549 cells to 1,2-NQ induces phosphorylation of EGFR, leading to the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). This activation is significantly suppressed by anti-EGFR antibodies (cetuximab and panitumumab) and inhibitors targeting rapidly accelerated fibrosarcoma (Raf; LY3009120) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK; U0126). These findings suggest that 1,2-NQ induces ERK1/2 phosphorylation by activating the Raf-MEK pathway. Notably, suppression of EGFR-ERK1/2 signaling resulted in a decrease in migratory activity. Our findings provide new insights into lung cancer carcinogenesis and may contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

Rationale: Physicians sometimes encounter various types of gut feelings (GFs) during clinical diagnosis. The type of GF addressed in this paper refers to the intuitive sense that the generated hypothesis might be incorrect. An appropriate diagnosis cannot be obtained unless these GFs are articulated and inventive solutions are devised.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore contributing factors identified in serious incident investigations conducted by internal, independent multidisciplinary teams.
Methods: A total of 166 serious incident investigation reports, conducted between 2018 and 2023 in 11 integrated social and health care organizations in Finland, were analyzed. The reports were classified by incident type and contributing factor, which were analyzed using the WHO's Conceptual Framework for the International Classification for Patient Safety.

Aims: This study aims to assess the effectiveness and implementation of the 5Ways@School curriculum-based intervention in Norwegian schools. The intervention builds on the Five Ways to Wellbeing framework, and promotes five action domains: connect with others, be physically active, take notice, keep learning, and give. The study objectives include assessing the intervention's acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, fidelity, and cost, as well as its impact on students' wellbeing and mental health.

Cognitive function is a critical health indicator of older adults in later life. However, previous research has paid less attention to the impact of pre-retirement work-related characteristics on cognitive functions, especially in Asia. Thus, this study aims to examine the relationship between work-related factors and cognitive functions of the retired population, using Taiwan as an example.

In the stable cone-jet regime, liquid usually presents the shape of a cone extended by a jet at its apex, with jet breakup yielding fine drops. The dynamics of the Taylor cone critically affect the stability of the jet and further determine the jet and/or drop size. In the present work, the morphology of the Taylor cone, cone length, and cone angle were studied through experimental and numerical means, where the operating parameters and liquid properties are considered.
