Article Abstract

In the past, research on a circular economy often focused on economic and ecological sustainability, while research on the social side of circularity has stepped up recently. The circular economy is often framed as a way to not only foster competitiveness and resource security, but also create opportunities to boost employment and provide high-quality, local jobs. This study aims to be the first to empirically interrogate this labor-enhancing assumption by using advanced Natural Language Processing in a unique combination with cross-sectional regression analysis for all private companies in Belgium in 2021. We show that companies applying circular strategies are more labor intensive than companies applying less circular strategies. However, we do find that the results differ between the type of circular strategy that is implemented: while companies involved in recycling strategies are more labor intensive than average, higher-ranking circular strategies seem to be less labor intensive. Furthermore, firms applying more circular strategies are employing a smaller share of low-skilled employees. These findings imply that the transition to a circular economy does not automatically entail social sustainability, but that what type of circularity is encouraged matters. It also calls attention to flanking policies that are needed to ensure that the potential benefits of the circular economy are not disadvantaging workers, particularly low-skilled and vulnerable groups. This research is therefore of importance for policy makers, educational institutions, and companies in Belgium, and is applicable to other small, open economies with a highly regulated labor market.

The development of innovative bioprocessing technologies has resulted from the growing global need for sustainable forms of energy and environmentally friendly waste treatment. In this review, we focus on the combined electro-fermentation and microbial fuel cells, as they form a hybrid system that simultaneously addresses wastewater treatment, bioenergy production, and bioplastics. Even though microbial fuel cells produce electricity out of the organic waste by the use of electroactive microorganisms, electro-fermentation improves the microbial pathways through the external electrochemical management.

Hydrothermal-based Wastewater Solids Management for Targeted Resource Recovery and Decarbonization in the Contiguous U.S.

Environ Sci Technol

The Grainger College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, United States.

Wastewater solids management is a key contributor to the operational cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). This study proposes a 'waste-to-energy' strategy using a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-based system to displace conventional energy- and emission-intensive practices. The proposed system directs HTL-produced biocrude to oil refineries and recovers regionally tailored nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) constitutes a significant global health challenge, accounting for a considerable proportion of cancer cases and associated mortality. Projections indicate a potential increase in new cases by 2040, attributed to demographic factors such as aging and population growth. Although advancements in the understanding of CRC pathophysiology have broadened treatment options, challenges such as drug resistance and adverse effects persist, highlighting the necessity for enhanced diagnostic methodologies.

Faculdade de Engenharia de Alimentos (FEA), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Rua Monteiro Lobato, 80, 13083-862, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

The hydrolysis of biomass in fermentative processes often faces the difficulty of generating inhibitory products. Its reduction or removal is essential to enable the use of agro-industrial waste, such as cashew apple bagasse. Therefore, this study aimed to find an optimized condition for the hydrolysis of cashew apple bagasse by subcritical water and to introduce an in-line pre-purification process.

The effect of feeding Hermetia illucens larvae (black soldier fly, BSFL) with by-products from olive oil (dry olive leaves, OL; full-fat dry olive pomace, OP) or quinoa (quinoa husk, QH) on the bioaccumulation of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of the meals was evaluated. Diets were formulated with different percentages of inclusion (OL15, OL30, OL50; OP30, OP50, OP70, OP90; QH15, QH30, QH50). Antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS methods), total phenolic compounds (TPC), targeted bioactive compounds analysis, and estimation of efficiency of bioaccumulation (EB) were performed, and compared to the experimental substrates.
