Factor analysis is a well-known statistical method to describe the variability of observed variables in terms of a smaller number of unobserved latent variables called factors. Even though latent factors are conceptually independent of each other, their influence on the observed variables is often joint and synergistic. We propose to quantify the synergy of the joint influence of factors on the observed variables using O-information, a recently introduced metric to assess high-order dependencies in complex systems; in the proposed framework, latent factors and observed variables are jointly analyzed in terms of their joint informational character. Two case studies are reported: analyzing resting fMRI data, we find that DMN and FP networks show the highest synergy, consistent with their crucial role in higher cognitive functions; concerning HeLa cells, we find that the most synergistic gene is STK-12 (AURKB), suggesting that this gene is involved in controlling the HeLa cell cycle. We believe that our approach, representing a bridge between factor analysis and the field of high-order interactions, will find wide application across several domains.

Importance: Exposure to inflammation from chorioamnionitis places the fetus at higher risk of premature birth and may increase the risk of neurodevelopmental impairments, though the evidence for the latter is mixed.
Objective: To evaluate whether moderate to severe histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) is directly associated with adverse motor performance, independent of the indirect mediating effects of premature birth.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This prospective, population-based cohort study recruited participants between September 16, 2016, and November 19, 2019, from referral and nonreferral neonatal intensive care units of 5 southwestern Ohio hospitals.

Decreasing funding for nonhuman animal research decreases the opportunity for students and researchers to explore the behavior of many species in many contexts. In the long run, this will reduce variability within the experimental analysis of behavior around what species are being researched and what questions are being asked. New technologies, however, offer students and researchers the opportunity to observe the behavior of organisms in everyday environments in cost-effective ways.

Heterogeneity in cryoEM is essential for capturing the structural variability of macromolecules, reflecting their functional states and biological significance. However, estimating heterogeneity remains challenging due to particle misclassification and algorithmic biases, which can lead to reconstructions that blend distinct conformations or fail to resolve subtle differences. Furthermore, the low signal-to-noise ratio inherent in cryo-EM data makes it nearly impossible to detect minute structural changes, as noise often obscures subtle variations in macromolecular projections.

Purpose: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with acute postoperative effects that increase the risk of falls. These effects differ between the medial parapatellar (PP) and mid-vastus (MV) surgical techniques but have not been evaluated in terms of postural sway complexity.
