We determined CYP2D6*4 and CYP2D6* genotypes and metabolizer phenotypes in 96 patients with suspected malaria in Venezuela and found intermediate or poor metabolizer phenotypes in ≈25% of cases. Nine of 44 malaria patients had Plasmodium vivax recurrence. Public health authorities should evaluate the benefits of increasing total doses of primaquine for treatment.

pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic infectious disease in thoracic solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, occurring particularly in the setting of augmented immunosuppression. Thoracic allograft recipients are particularly at risk of severe outcomes. Diagnosis is frequently delayed due to nonspecific clinical findings and challenges in ruling out other opportunistic pathogens and distinguishing between pneumonia and colonization.

This study evaluated the efficacy of adding primaquine (PQ) to artemether-lumefantrine (AL) for treating uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Ethiopia. Asexual parasite clearance was monitored with microscopy and molecular techniques, while gametocyte clearance was observed solely through microscopy. Genotyping to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection was performed using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Since 2012, the WHO has recommended a single low dose of primaquine (SLDPQ, 0.25 mg/kg) alongside artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) to block transmission and combat artemisinin resistance. Despite its proven benefits, SLDPQ adoption in African malaria policies remains limited.
