Article Abstract

Widespread pesticides use in agriculture has led to significant groundwater and food contamination, posing severe risks to both human health and the environment. Real-time detection of these emerging contaminants remains a formidable challenge. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors have remained a viable technique for overcoming the limits ascribed to their ultra-sensitivity and rapid detection times as well as excellent sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity. This comprehensive review will encompass the most recent advancements in the utilization of functional materials such as metal-organic framework, MXene, carbon organic framework, carbon nanotubes, and graphene modifiers for the detection of a myriad of pesticides via electrochemical detection techniques, electrode materials, electrolyte solutions, and sample matrices. This review compiles performance data, including detection limits and linear ranges, for various sensing platforms. Finally, the write-up will discuss advanced sensor technology and address the improvements made on electrochemical sensors and biosensors for pesticide detection, which will be important in future studies on pesticide determination.

Functional recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) varies widely among individuals, and traditional assessments often fail to detect subtle changes in real-world walking ability. Wearable sensors offer continuous and objective tracking of gait outside of clinical settings. In this prospective, longitudinal study, thirty-one patients undergoing unilateral TKA wore thigh-mounted accelerometers continuously from 2 weeks before surgery through 90 days postoperatively.

Tiredness/fatigue and sexuality in everyday life: Findings from an ecological momentary assessment.

J Neural Transm (Vienna)

September 2025

Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, University of Vienna, Liebiggasse 5, Vienna, 1010, Austria.

Tiredness may be associated with increased or decreased sexual experience and behavior while fatigue seems to have a predominantly negative effect, although evidence is scarce. This ecological momentary assessment study is the first to examine associations between tiredness or fatigue and concurrent / subsequent sexual desire or sexual arousal and previous / subsequent sexual activity in daily life, including event-based measurements and considering gender differences. Healthy heterosexual individuals (n = 63), aged between 19 and 32 years and in a relationship, indicated their tiredness, general fatigue, physical fatigue, sexual desire, and sexual arousal on an iPod seven times daily over 14 days, and any event-based occurrences of sexual activity.

The prompt and accurate identification of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for mitigating the transmission of infections. Conventional detection methods face limitations, including lengthy processing, complex sample pretreatment, high instrumentation costs, and insufficient sensitivity for rapid on-site screening. To address these challenges, an aptamer (Apt)-sensor based on functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was developed for detecting Escherichia coli.

Observing differential spin currents by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering.

Nature

September 2025

National Synchrotron Light Source II, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY, USA.

Controlling spin currents, that is, the flow of spin angular momentum, in small magnetic devices, is the principal objective of spin electronics, a main contender for future energy-efficient information technologies. A pure spin current has never been measured directly because the associated electric stray fields and/or shifts in the non-equilibrium spin-dependent distribution functions are too small for conventional experimental detection methods optimized for charge transport. Here we report that resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can bridge this gap by measuring the spin current carried by magnons-the quanta of the spin wave excitations of the magnetic order-in the presence of temperature gradients across a magnetic insulator.
