Silver-mediated phosphacyclic ring expansion with strategic placement of phosphorus and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) on Vat Orange 3 was carried out. The target compounds possess narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gaps as low as 2.02 eV, with pronounced absorption across the visible region of the optical spectrum and intense luminescence at 691 nm, with impressive quantum yields of up to 70%. Moreover, the P-based conjugated materials exhibit reversible reduction events as low as -0.98 V.

Accessing PAHs having all zigzag edges remains elusive, and this work demonstrates a general synthetic strategy for the construction of one such scaffold, namely, anthanthrene, through Ru(II)-catalyzed APEX reaction at the masked-bay region. The protocol efficiently delivers a range of uniquely substituted anthanthrenes with excellent regioselectivity, which is supported by DFT studies. The synthesis of anthanthrone derivatives, a core structure of vat orange dyes, is another highlight of this study.

Organic dyes are interesting building blocks for the preparation of organic semiconductors as they possess synthetic handles that can be used to functionalize them and, consequently, change their electronic properties. However, reactions to extend their π-conjugated framework through ring annulation have only been scarcely tested. Herein, we report the use of alkyne benzannulation on 2,8-dibromo-dibenzo[def,mno]chrysene (vat orange 3) and 2,9-dibromo-dibenzo[b,def]chrysene (vat orange 1) to extend the conjugation and reduce their bandgap.
