Article Abstract

We utilized antibiograms from 10 Canadian Neonatal Intensive Care Units to assess antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among Gram-negative bacilli during 2015-2021. Escherichia coli was the most prevalent isolate, with >85% susceptible to third-generation cephalosporin. The resistance to carbapenems was identified in <1% of the isolates.

Phosphorylated structural analogs of Benzalkonium Chloride-diisopropoxyphosphorylmethane (dimethyldodecylammonium) bromide 1 (phosphorylated quaternary ammonium salt) and isopropoxyphosphorylmethane (dimethylalkylammonium) 2 (phosphorylated betaine) were synthesized. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The antibacterial, antifungal, and ecotoxicological profiles of the synthesized compounds were evaluated against aquatic organisms and flowering plants.

Microbiota of critical areas prior to reopening in an oncology center: Potential uncommon nosocomial pathogens for vulnerable populations.

Departamento de Especialidades Médicas, Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas, Surquillo 15038, Perú.

Healthcare-associated infections are linked with the contamination of inanimate surfaces and the air in occupied hospital areas by recognized pathogens. However, there is limited information about the presence of these microorganisms or other potential pathogens in critical areas prior to their clinical operation. Here, we determined the microbial community in critical areas prior to their validation for hospital care and reviewed the background for the potential pathogenic role of this microbiota for populations susceptible to opportunistic infections.

Self-pumping Janus nanofiber membrane with pH monitoring capability, integrated with a drug-loaded fast-dissolving layer for enhanced chronic wound healing.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses significant challenges in conventional antibiotic treatments for chronic wound infections, highlighting an urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. To address this issue, we developed a multifunctional electrospun nanofiber dressing co-loaded with anthocyanin (ATH) and asiaticoside (AS) that possesses antimicrobial activity. The tri-layer dressing contains three functional components: a hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin (PAN-ATH) layer for pH monitoring, a hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) layer for exudate management, and a water-soluble pullulan-Bletilla striata polysaccharide-asiaticoside (PUL-BSP-AS) layer.

Infections resulting from wild land and aquatic species injuries: A case series from Mornington Peninsula, Australia.

August 2025

Monash University, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash, Victoria 3800, Australia; Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Peninsula Health, Melbourne, Victoria 3199, Australia.

Background: Urban expansion into natural habitats has increased human interactions with wild terrestrial and aquatic species, leading to a rise in animal-related injuries. These incidents often result in complex infections, posing major public health challenges. This study examines the epidemiology, therapeutic interventions, and clinical outcomes of infections from non-domesticated animal injuries in the Mornington Peninsula, Australia.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biodegradable biopolyesters produced by bacteria, offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic plastics. However, current methods of recovering intracellular PHA require complex cell lysis steps, which contribute to high production costs. In this study, we developed a novel approach for efficient PHA recovery by engineering an autolytic strain of using the lytic gene system from lambda (λ) phage.
