Article Abstract

Plastic abundance in the ocean has increased systematically since the mid-20th century. Here we present a time-series dataset of microplastic abundance collected at several stations located in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean off Ecuador from 2008 to 2018. The data reveals a significant and sustained increase in the abundance of microplastics over time across all sampling sites; this implies a homogeneous and sustained input, which likely also occurs at other coastal and marine ecosystems. Fiber strands were the most common microplastic observed, while polyethylene and polypropylene were the principal polymers identified by μFTIR analysis. A forecast model of the time-series data predicted that microplastics will be 3.2, 5.1 and 9.7 times more abundant in 2030, 2050 and 2100, respectively, relative to 2008 observations. These results provide insights into the decade-plus trend in microplastic abundance observed in coastal waters, which have important implications for future marine plastic pollution projections and associated ecosystem impacts.

Mercury (Hg) emissions from both natural and anthropogenic sources influence Hg levels in the biota of a given region. Tropical regions, such as those in the Southwestern Atlantic (SWA) and the Eastern Pacific (EP) are particularly interesting due to differences in natural Hg sources, which may impact Hg levels in marine organisms, including sea turtles. In the EP, the Circum-Pacific Belt is a significant natural source of Hg, while natural Hg sources in the SWA are negligible.

Giardia duodenalis is a gastrointestinal parasite and one of the most frequently reported parasitic infections associated with contaminated water. This study investigated the diversity of domestic and imported Giardia assemblages in Norway, with a focus on the genetic characterization of domestic assemblage A isolates using multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) targeting six genome markers. The eastern Indo-Gangetic plains with huge natural resources have been projected as the seat of second green revolution in India which could only be possible by agricultural intensification and adoption of environment friendly and sustainable agricultural practices like organic farming (OF), natural farming (NF), and integrated crop management (ICM) practices. However, the effects of these management practices on soil carbon reserves and their lability, nitrogen fractions, crop yield and their potential to climate change mitigation are largely unexplored. Considering this, a field experiment was conducted (since 2020) to evaluate the impacts of NF OF, and ICM practices on depth-wise distribution of carbon and nitrogen fractions, carbon pools, carbon management index, carbon sequestration, and grain yield of rice in an acidic Alfisol under rice-maize system.
