Article Abstract

Grief research among American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN) people has been limited to studies on historical trauma and elevated mortality rates among AI/ANs. A lack of validated measures is one barrier to grief research with AI/ANs. Therefore, we conducted three studies to develop and validate a culturally congruent measure of grief. In Study 1, interviews were conducted with 12 AI reservation-based community members to understand perspectives on grief. In Study 2, AI/AN community members ( = 10) and professionals ( = 7) provided feedback on measure items adapted or developed in Study 1. In Study 3, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using separate randomly selected samples from a web-based survey of 600 AI/ANs were conducted to identify the factor structure of the Complicated and Adaptive Grief Inventory for Native Americans (CAGI-NA). Findings suggest that the resulting 30-item CAGI-NA is valid, reliable, and suitable for use in research with AI/AN people.

Introduction: Psychological stress has been proposed as a trigger for disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS), but findings have been inconsistent. While prior research has focused largely on chronic stressors, little is known about how people with MS (pwMS) cope with acute, large-scale stress events such as war.

Objective: Examine the effects of wartime stress following the October 7, 2023 attack on disease activity in pwMS, and to assess whether emotional factors are associated with relapse risk during this period.

[Biliodigestive anastomosis: technique and outcome].

Chirurgie (Heidelb)

September 2025

Klink für Allgemein- und Viszeralchirurgie, Universitätsklinikum der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen, Erlangen, Deutschland.

The biliodigestive anastomosis represents a core element of hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. It requires a precise surgical technique and detailed knowledge of biliary anatomy and vascular supply. A tension-free suture, sufficient perfusion of the anastomosed structures and an exact mucosa-to-mucosa adaptation using delicate absorbable suture material are decisive for a successful construction.

Management of diabetes mellitus in hemodialysis is highly complex due to increased glycemic variability and hypoglycemic risk. The use of technologies applied to diabetes has been shown to improve glycemic control, however data in dialysis patients are limited. To describe the efficacy and safety of the minimed 780G AHCL system in a stable hemodialysis patient and during hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Polytrauma patients are defined by the Berlin Consensus as those with severe injuries across multiple regions and require complex, adaptable treatment approaches to address both immediate and long-term needs of the patient, while considering the resource availability. This review evaluates early total care (ETC), which attempts early definitive fixation, against damage control orthopedics (DCO), which focuses on temporary stabilization to reduce physiological strain from surgery. While ETC promotes early mobilization, DCO reduces risks and subsequent complications associated with the "second hit" phenomenon in critically ill patients.

Aim: This study evaluated the short-term outcomes of low anterior resection for rectal cancer in Japan before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on the timing of its reclassification within Japan in May 2023.

Methods: Using data from the Japanese National Clinical Database, we analyzed 109 754 low anterior resection cases between January 2018 and December 2023, categorized into pre-pandemic (February 2020 and earlier), pandemic (March 2020-April 2023), and post-pandemic (May 2023 onward) periods. Trends in the number of low anterior resection cases, postoperative intensive care unit utilization, and complications, including anastomotic leakage and pneumonia, were examined.
