Article Abstract

Podocyte infolding (PI) in a thickened glomerular basement membrane (GBM) is a rare pathological finding in electron microscopy (EM). We histopathologically evaluated a 57-year-old Japanese male patient with clustering microspheres and PI in the GBM. EM showed clustering microspheres in irregularly thickened GBM and PI into the GBM. Endothelial cells also invaded the GBM on EM. Low-vacuum scanning EM revealed numerous openings or holes in the GBM. Careful examination by EM is needed to identify further cases of clustering microspheres and PI. It is also important to explore these cases using new approaches such as low-vacuum scanning EM.

This paper presents the generation and evaluation of a novel potential drug delivery platform for biologics, based on recombinant spider silk. Targeting CD40 for activation of antigen presenting cells, in order to overcome tumor induced T cell tolerance, have shown promising results in cell and animal models. However, further trials have gained limited results due to severe side reactions.

Synapses are highly specialized sites of asymmetric cell-cell contact that mediate information transfer between neurons. Many proteins have been identified that contribute to the complex processes that underlie the formation, organization, and maintenance of synapses, and the molecular biology of synapse formation is increasingly well understood. Surprisingly, synaptic differentiation does not require a cellular target.

From cellular mechanotransduction to the formation of embryonic tissues and organs, mechanics has been shown to play an important role in the control of cell behavior and embryonic development. Most of our existing knowledge of how mechanics affects cell behavior comes from in vitro studies, mainly because measuring cell and tissue mechanics in 3D multicellular systems, and especially in vivo, remains challenging. Oil microdroplet sensors, and more recently gel microbeads, use surface deformations to directly quantify mechanical stresses within developing tissues, in vivo and in situ, as well as in 3D in vitro systems like organoids or multicellular spheroids.

Encapsulation of insulin-producing cells holds significant therapeutic potential for treating type 1 diabetes (T1DM). The impact of diabetic conditions on host responses is not well understood. This study is the first to compare ex-vivo whole blood responses to alginate microbeads in T1DM subjects versus healthy controls.
