Article Abstract

This article combines infrastructure history with a residual materialist approach to trace the history of creosote-a toxic coal tar oil used to impregnate wooden railroad ties. Once an unwanted by-product of coal gasification, creosote became a valued industrial fluid through state and corporate interventions. Focusing on Germany and Austro-Hungary from the 1880s to the interwar period, its study highlights the central role of actors like the Rütgers company in this transformation. It examines the scientification of wood impregnation, the rivalry between creosote-treated wooden ties and iron alternatives, and the influence of maintainers in shaping material preferences. By investigating creosote's "unruliness"-its toxic effects and unpredictable material behaviors, from molecular interactions to transnational flows-the article reveals the entangled impacts of industrial materials on infrastructure, human health, and the environment. In doing so, it underlines the interconnectedness of human and more-than-human worlds in the Anthropocene.

Associations between element mixtures and biomarkers of pathophysiologic pathways related to autism spectrum disorder.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

September 2025

Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital of Fudan University, National Children's Medical Center, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Objective: We previously documented that exposure to a spectrum of elements is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding as to how elemental mixtures contribute to the ASD development.

Materials And Methods: Serum and urinary concentrations of 26 elements and six biomarkers of ASD-relevant pathophysiologic pathways including serum HIPK 2, serum p53 protein, urine malondialdehyde (MDA), urine 8-OHdG, serum melatonin, and urine carnitine, were measured in 21 ASD cases and 21 age-matched healthy controls of children aged 6-12 years.

Background: Labor shortages in health care pose significant challenges to sustaining high-quality care for people with intellectual disabilities. Social robots show promise in supporting both people with intellectual disabilities and their health care professionals; yet, few are fully developed and embedded in productive care environments. Implementation of such technologies is inherently complex, requiring careful examination of facilitators and barriers influencing sustained use.

Objective: Assessment of submarining occurrence in PMHS (Post-Mortem Human Subject) testing can be challenging, particularly for obese PMHS. This study investigates varied kinetic and kinematic response parameters as potential indicators of submarining. Data from 36 whole-body PMHS frontal sled tests conducted under varying boundary conditions were analyzed, incorporating three spring-controlled seat configurations, two extreme anthropometric profiles, two crash pulses, and two seatback angles.

[Colonial collections in Portugal and their invisibilities: João Jardim and the Municipal Museum of Figueira da Foz].

Learning about the actors associated with the development of collections helps trace the signs of coloniality in museum discourse. The case of João dos Santos Pereira Jardim, the main donor of a collection in the ethnography section of the Municipal Museum of Figueira da Foz, confirms that military campaigns in colonial territories were key to enriching the collections of Portuguese museums. By reconstructing the journey of this military officer and the significance of two objects he collected, we reveal how this type of actor contributed to the growth of collections and prevailing Eurocentric narratives in museums.
