Article Abstract

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts surveillance for 5 sexually transmitted infections, yet Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium remain unmonitored despite their impact on women's health. Trichomonas vaginalis, the most common nonviral sexually transmitted infection in the United States, disproportionately affects marginalized populations and is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and increased susceptibility to HIV. Mycoplasma genitalium, an emerging sexually transmitted infection, is linked to cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and antibiotic resistance, yet its prevalence is estimated rather than systematically tracked. Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines outline 7 criteria for determining a reportable disease: frequency, severity, disparities, cost, preventability, communicability, and public interest. However, it has been argued that only 3 of these criteria have been fulfilled for Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium, preventing their designation as reportable sexually transmitted infections. Limited public health funding and the lack of a national surveillance program result in an underestimation of the national sexually transmitted infection burden, thus limiting efforts to mitigate the associated sexually transmitted infection-related morbidity.

Background: Young people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa account for the largest proportion of the vulnerable population in the world. Kenya has little evidence to showcase the utilization of sexual and reproductive health services among young people living with HIV. Nairobi County has one of the highest HIV burdens among adolescents and youth in the country.

Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a substantial public health concern, particularly among individuals with opioid addiction. The methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) programmes serve as a harm reduction strategy to mitigate HIV disease spread, yet the risk of HCV infection remains high within these settings. Accurate risk prediction for HCV seroconversion is therefore crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Nondisclosure of use of antiretroviral medications in Canadian blood donors.

September 2025

Medical Affairs and Innovation, Canadian Blood Services, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Donors are deferred if they are on antiretroviral medications (ARV) as post-exposure or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP or PrEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We assessed donor compliance by measuring ARV levels in selected anonymized donor samples collected from September 22, 2022 to December 31, 2024, almost all after the introduction of sexual risk behavior screening.

Methods: EDTA plasma samples collected at the time of donation (retention samples) were retrieved, frozen, and shipped for measurement of tenofovir and emtricitabine.
