Objective: The role of resting heart rate (HR) and of its changes over time on the progression of pulse wave velocity (PWV) has not been extensively evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate this relationship in a population of hypertensive patients in a longitudinal study.
Methods: We enrolled 572 hypertensive outpatients aged 18-80, followed by the Hypertension Unit of St. Gerardo Hospital (Monza, Italy). Anamnestic, clinical and laboratory data, BP and PWV were assessed at baseline and after a median follow-up of 3.7 ± 0.5 years.
Results: At baseline, mean age was 53.9 ± 12.7 years, SBP and DBP were 141.2 ± 17.8 and 86.5 ± 10.5 mmHg, HR was 65.6 ± 10.9 bpm and PWV was 8.6 ± 2.0 m/s. Despite an improvement in BP and therapies, at follow-up, a PWV increase (ΔPWV 0.5 ± 2.2 m/s). In patients with higher ΔHR, ΔPWV was significantly higher (0.82 ± 2.22 vs. 0.27 ± 2.25 m/s, P = 0.003). At multivariable stepwise regression, baseline HR showed a significant association with baseline PWV. However, neither HR nor ΔHR was significantly associated with ΔPWV. Same results were confirmed by mediation analysis.
Conclusion: The main result of our study was that despite the presence of a significant association between baseline HR and baseline PWV, neither HR nor ΔHR was significantly associated with PWV progression (ΔPWV). On the contrary, baseline PWV and baseline BP (SBP, DBP, MBP and PP) and their changes during follow-up present significant association with an accelerated process of arterial stiffening.

This study aims to investigate the longitudinal associations between changes in maximal cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and vascular/cardiac structure and function in paediatric athletes. 142 paediatric athletes with data for baseline and a one-year follow-up from the Munich Cardiovascular Adaptation in Young Athletes (MuCAYA) study (mean [SD] age at baseline: 14.0 [2.

Aims: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) is a representative measure of central arterial stiffness and an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Femoral-ankle PWV (faPWV) represents peripheral arterial stiffness, but its association with CVD has not been specifically investigated.
Methods: We analyzed 3,402 ARIC participants without prior coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), or stroke at Visit 5 (2011-13) (mean age 74.

Background: The short-chain fatty acid propionate has been shown to attenuate atherosclerosis, for example by modulating intestinal cholesterol metabolism. Beyond cholesterol metabolism, data from rodent models suggest a potential additional effect on blood pressure reduction.
Material And Methods: We conducted a prospective uncontrolled, exploratory, and observational study on 58 individuals receiving propionate supplementation (500 mg twice daily) without preexisting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, assessing peripheral and central blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and endothelial function.

Background: The prevalence of e-cigarette use has increased in recent years, driven by the perception that e-cigarettes are less harmful compared to traditional tobacco smoking. Nevertheless, conflicting data exists regarding the potential impact of e-cigarettes on vascular health. Present study aimed to elucidate whether markers of vascular/microvascular function differs between e-cigarette and tobacco smokers, especially following acute exposure.

Background And Aims: Intensive periodontal treatment (IPT) improves endothelial function in patients with periodontitis (PD). However, whether these changes can slow the progression of structural vascular remodelling remains unclear. This randomized clinical trial evaluated the impact of IPT on carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) over 2 years (NCT03072342).
