The study of membrane contact sites (MCS) has profoundly transformed our understanding of inter-organelle communication. These sites, where the membranes of two organelles are closely apposed, facilitate the transfer of small molecules such as lipids and ions. They are especially crucial for the maintenance of the structure and function of organelles like mitochondria and lipid droplets, which are largely excluded from vesicular trafficking.

Shigellosis is a leading cause of diarrheal disease in low-middle-income countries (LMICs). Effective vaccines will help to reduce the disease burden, exacerbated by increasing antibiotic resistance, in the most susceptible population represented by young children. A challenge for a broadly protective vaccine against shigellosis is to cover the most epidemiologically relevant serotypes among >50 Shigella serotypes circulating worldwide.
