Article Abstract

The distribution of alkaloids, with a focus on their chemodiversity, has been reported previously, but not at a genera-wide diversity level. This review provides a comprehensive survey of the occurrence of alkaloids across the genera of the family. This survey is taxonomically guided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Taxonomy Browser, with targeted keyword searches conducted in the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) SciFinder-n and PubMed. The family comprises over 1214 species across three subfamilies: (1 genus, 5 species), (3 genera plus 11 subgenera, 617 species), and (58 genera plus 13 subgenera, 592 species). alkaloids have been identified exclusively in 36 of the 58 genera and 6 of the 13 subgenera within the subfamily. To date, more than 600 alkaloids have been isolated, predominantly from this subfamily-hence the designation " alkaloids". These alkaloids display a wide spectrum of biological activities, including acetylcholinesterase inhibition, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer effects. A notable example is galanthamine (also known as galantamine), an FDA-approved drug marketed under the brand names Reminyl™ (Janssen Research Foundation, Beerse, Belgium, 2001) and Razadyne™ (Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research, New Brunswick, NJ, USA, 2004) for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, due to its potent acetylcholinesterase-inhibitory activity. Galanthamine has been isolated from species belonging to the genera , , , , , , , , , , , and . Lycorine is another widely distributed alkaloid found across multiple genera, and it has been extensively studied for its diverse bioactivities. Given the remarkable chemical diversity and bioactivity of alkaloids, along with the many underexplored genera and species, further research into species and their alkaloids is strongly warranted to support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic agents.

Mecopini has received limited attention since the last century, highlighting an important knowledge gap in its systematics and taxonomy. The morphological characteristics of several genera within this tribe contradict the widely accepted tribal diagnosis, suggesting the current classification is unsustainable. In this study, we examined mecopine specimens from Taiwan and the Philippines, reconstructed the first molecular phylogeny estimate for this obscure tribe, and examined type series of all described Pascoe, () Heller and () Heller, representing two subgenera within the genus Pascoe, to propose taxonomic acts on these genera.

Background: The taxonomy of Paphiopedilum-a diverse group of slipper orchids-has long posed challenges due to high morphological variability and conflicting phylogenetic signals. Despite intensive research, a clear and stable infrageneric classification remains unresolved.

Results: We present an integrative phylogenetic framework based on multiple nuclear low-copy genes (XDH, PHYC, LFY, RAD51, ACO, DEF4), ITS and plastid (matK) sequences, supported by morphological and biogeographical data.

Despite the wide variation in mosquito reproductive strategies and the present lack of behavioral and ecological information for the majority of described mosquito species, the predominant egg-laying behaviors observed in well-studied species have led to sweeping generalizations of oviposition patterns across entire mosquito genera. Mosquitoes in the genus Culex, which contains over 800 species across 28 subgenera, are commonly believed to exclusively lay egg masses ("rafts") that float on the water surface. This oversimplification persists, though we currently know little regarding the reproduction of many Culex species and subgenera.

Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data have been critical in resolving deep and shallow relationships across the tree of life. Such analyses have provided clarity where traditional morphological analyses may not have, and have been instrumental in a range of evolutionary, systematic, and taxonomic studies for providing clarity to evolutionary relationships. One such case where evolutionary relationships are poorly understood is in the mosquito genus .

Cyanoprokaryotes are organisms that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. One of the most diverse orders is Nostocales, whose species are characterized by the presence of heterocytes. Phycofloristic lists in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean have secondarily recorded cyanoprokaryotes.
