Article Abstract

Background: Understanding the role of space weather, specifically Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMDs) caused by solar activity, on health outcomes is unclear. One emerging link includes the impact of space weather on myocardial infarctions (MI). In this study we examined the correlation between MI and GMDs in Brazil.

Methods: We used a database from the public health in Brazil, focusing on the city of São José dos Campos (23° 10' 44″ S, 45° 53' 13″ W), located in the state of São Paulo, during the period of 1998-2005. We focused on admissions for MIs, which included a total of 871 men and 469 women. We categorized the MI data into three age groups: age 30 and younger, age 31-60, and age over 60. Additionally, we incorporated Planetary Index (Kp) data as an indicator of variations in the Earth's geomagnetic field resulting from solar disturbances, categorized as quiet, moderate, or disturbed days. In our analysis, we employed two methods: statistical counting and the unsupervised clustering known as K-Means, considering the attributes of age, sex, and geomagnetic condition.

Results: Here we show that geomagnetic conditions have an impact on MI cases, particularly for women. The rate of relative frequency of MI cases during disturbed geomagnetic conditions is almost three times greater compared to quiet geomagnetic conditions. Using the unsupervised K-Means algorithm, the results indicate that the group associated with disturbed geomagnetic conditions has a higher incidence of MIs in women.

Conclusions: Overall, our results provide evidence that women may exhibit a higher susceptibility to the effects of geomagnetic disturbances caused by solar activity on MI.

We examine energetic electron transport in Earth's outer radiation belt, presenting a mechanism for rapid (nondiffusive) radial transport. This process relies on electron crossings of an asymmetric separatrix in slow-fast Hamiltonian system, occurring in Earth's dayside magnetosphere due to interactions with the interplanetary magnetic field. The resulting asymmetry quickly destroys adiabatic invariant through geometric jumps, driving exponential phase-space mixing and enhancing radial transport of ≳1  MeV electrons during geomagnetically quiet conditions.

Universal Vector Calibration for Orientation-Invariant 3D Sensor Data.

Sensors (Basel)

Modern electronic devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, and robots typically integrate three-dimensional sensors to track the device's movement in the 3D space. However, sensor measurements in three-dimensional vectors are highly sensitive to device orientation since a slight change in the device's tilt or heading can change the vector values. To avoid complications, applications using these sensors often use only the magnitude of the vector, as in geomagnetic-based indoor positioning, or assume fixed device holding postures such as holding a smartphone in portrait mode only.

Short-term geomagnetic disturbances (GMD), quantified using the Kp index, are associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and total mortality. This study aimed to investigate the impact of GMD on total, CVD, stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI) mortality in South Korea within the 2001-2019 period. Using generalized additive models, daily Kp index and mortality data were employed to assess the impact of GMD on mortality, with temporal trends and temperature included as confounders for adjustment.

The geomagnetic field (GMF) influences biological processes across diverse species, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying magnetoreception remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined the effects of hypomagnetic field (HypoMF) conditions-where the GMF is effectively shielded-on the assembly dynamics of the bacterial actin-like protein MamK in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1. Through in vitro assays, we observed that HypoMF conditions disrupt MamK assembly, diminishing its ability to form elongated filaments.
