The complex composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been extensively studied by modern high-resolution analytical methods. However, DOM reactivity is still enigmatic due to a lack of experimental data with sufficiently high temporal resolution to resolve the intrinsic dynamics within DOM. Likewise, extensive isomeric overlap prevents studying transformation of DOM components with respect to their chemical properties, e.g., molecular polarity. Online ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography with ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-UHRMS) increases the resolution of isomeric DOM composition across a wide range of polarity. We performed a TiO-aided photo-irradiation experiment with wastewater treatment plant effluent with high temporal sampling resolution (8 time points, 5 h irradiation). Besides new products (<10%) and removed components (25-60%), intermediate products () were also found, representing 20-60% of components within distinct polarity fractions. The reaction time to reach the peak magnitude maximum was positively related to the H/C ratio of . About 35% of the DOM components showed different reactivities for different polarity fractions. If applied to experiments in the future, our approach offers new perspectives for biogeochemical interpretation and provides important information for drinking water processing or wastewater treatment with respect to potential toxic .

The MetaboHealth score is an indicator of physiological frailty in middle aged and older individuals. The aim of the current study was to explore which molecular pathways co-vary with the MetaboHealth score. Using a Luminex cytokine assay and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based proteomics we explored the plasma proteins associating with the difference in 100 extreme scoring individuals selected from two large population cohorts, the Leiden Longevity Study (LLS) and the Rotterdam Study (RS), and discordant monozygotic twin pairs from the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR).

A sensitive electrochemical glucose biosensor using ZrO₂@CNTs nanocomposite was developed for real-time metabolism monitoring for athletes. The nanocomposite was prepared by a simple ultrasound-assisted technique, and the glucose oxidase (GOx) was covalently immobilized to improve the biorecognition ability. CNTs treated with acid served as a highly conductive framework, and ZrO₂ nanoparticles can provide structural stability and catalytic performance, thus showing synergistic enhancement of electron transfer kinetics and enzyme loading capacity.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large group of emerging organic pollutants that contaminate the environment, food, and consumer products. Textiles and other outdoor products are a major source of PFAS exposure due to their water-repellent impregnations. Determination of PFASs in textiles is increasingly important for enhancing their contribution to the circular economy.

The essential cofactor coenzyme A (CoASH) and its thioester derivatives (acyl-CoAs) have pivotal roles in cellular metabolism. However, the mechanism by which different acyl-CoAs are accurately partitioned into different subcellular compartments to support site-specific reactions, and the physiological impact of such compartmentalization, remain poorly understood. Here, we report an optimized liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based pan-chain acyl-CoA extraction and profiling method that enables a robust detection of 33 cellular and 23 mitochondrial acyl-CoAs from cultured human cells.

Polysorbate 20 (PS20) is one of the most commonly used non-ionic surfactants in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food products. Considered as biocompatible and non-irritating, it is further valued for its solubilising and protein stabilising properties. PS20 is manufactured through a multi-stage reaction of sorbitol with various fatty acids and ethylene oxide, resulting in a complex mixture of components with different molecular weights and polarity.
