The creation of surface relief gratings using hydrogels for label-free biomolecule detection represents a significant advance in the development of versatile, cutting-edge biosensors. Central to this innovation is the formulation of materials with enhanced mechanical properties, especially for applications in soft, wearable technologies. In this work, we have developed novel biofunctional hydrogels that incorporate slide-ring supramolecular structures into their network, enabling the production of surface relief gratings with superior mechanical characteristics for biomolecule detection without the need for labels. These hydrogels, functionalized with bovine serum albumin and goat anti-rabbit antibodies, demonstrated excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward anti-bovine serum albumin and rabbit IgGs in blood serum, evaluated using a label-free format. Remarkably, the new materials matched the analytical performance of conventional hydrogels based on static networks while offering dramatically improved toughness and elasticity, with a compressive modulus comparable to human skin. This demonstrates the potential of slide-ring hydrogels for fabricating robust, label-free biosensing platforms. Furthermore, the flexibility of this system allows for the incorporation of various recognition elements tailored to specific applications.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common and burdensome in women. Here, we discuss challenges with our current models of care and how evolving insights into the female urogenital microbiome have advanced the understanding of how we diagnose, treat, and prevent recurrent UTIs in nonpregnant adult women. Traditional care models attribute recurrent UTIs mainly to gastrointestinal sources, resulting in significant emphasis on eradicating pathogens with potential overreliance on antibiotics.

Objective: Introduced in 1970s, Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) devices have played a crucial role in managing a wide range of complex and refractory chronic pain, particularly back/leg pain as well as neuropathic pain. Currently, two primary types of leads, cylindrical and paddle leads, are prevalent in pain management. While both effectively alleviate pain, cylindrical leads, due to their small size, are susceptible to movement and migration as well as a smaller surface area for coverage, leading to device displacement and failure to provide pain relief.

Purpose: This retrospective crossover study compares two-month outcomes of cyclosporine A ophthalmic emulsion 0.05% (Restasis) versus cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel (Lacrifill), a novel canalicular occlusive device, in 20 patients with refractory aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (DED) at a rural optometry clinic.
Methods: In patients with moderate to severe DED, two-month outcomes for Restasis and Lacrifill (after a washout period) were compared using tear breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer scores, corneal staining (Efron scale), and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder characterized by tear film instability due to reduced tear secretion, increased evaporation, or the production of poor-quality tears. This imbalance leads to ocular surface inflammation, tissue damage, and aberrant nociception, collectively imposing a substantial burden on patients' quality of life. Emerging evidence highlights the pivotal role of ocular surface inflammation in the pathophysiology of chronic DED.
