Bacterial biofilms serve as a natural barrier, enabling bacteria residing within them to exist and potentially amplify bacterial resistance by shielding themselves from bactericide exposure. Despite considerable efforts directed toward inhibiting bacterial growth, research has overlooked bacterial biofilms to a significant extent, leading to the frequent deficiency of traditional antimicrobials in inhibiting such biofilms. This necessitates the development of antimicrobials capable of inhibiting biofilms for effective antibacterial intervention.

Plasma-based surface treatments are increasingly used to functionalize cell culture substrates, enabling the covalent immobilization of biomolecules without chemical reagents. However, a hidden risk in such processes is the in situ formation of plasma-polymerized nanoparticles (PPNs), which can result in particulate contamination. These particles form in the plasma discharge and accumulate inside well plates, compromising surface uniformity, interfering with biomolecule presentation and confounding cell-based assay results.

Willful ignorance refers to the deliberate avoidance of available information, often to shield oneself from psychological discomfort. While traditionally explained by emotional costs tied to the content of information, this paper highlights an overlooked dimension: the social costs of seeking information. Drawing on theoretical frameworks and experimental evidence, we show that individuals often avoid asking sensitive questions not merely to remain ignorant, but for social reasons-including preserving trust, respecting norms, and avoiding intrusions into privacy.

Direct air capture of CO (DAC) is critical to achieving climate goals, requiring the removal of approximately 220 000 Mt of CO by 2100. Amine-functionalized sorbents are promising for CO capture but face challenges under high humidity, where water sorption reduces the CO selectivity and capillary condensation may degrade the sorbent, especially the delicate silica aerogel backbone, compromising structural integrity. To address this issue, we introduce superhydrophobic silica gels functionalized by hybrid grafting of amine, long-aliphatic, and trimethylsilyl groups.

The Future of MXene Fibers.

Adv Mater

September 2025

Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, Geelong, Victoria, 3216, Australia.

Since the first report on MXene-coated fibers in 2017, the field has grown rapidly, with over 1500 publications on fiber-related advancements. Improved understanding of MXene's colloidal dispersions has led to new fabrication techniques, resulting in fibers with exceptional electrical conductivity and electrochemical properties. These fibers show promise in energy storage, wearable electronics, motion and strain sensors, and electromagnetic interference shielding.
