Article Abstract

Eicosanoids-lipid mediators derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid-have a notable role in inflammatory signaling. Cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have been shown in preclinical studies to modulate inflammatory pathways the modulating the enzymes that generate eicosanoids, namely lipoxygenase (LOX), cyclooxygenase (COX), and cytochrome P450 (CYP450). This present study aimed to investigate how CBD and THC effect plasma levels of eicosanoids generated through LOX, COX, and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) pathways. Using plasma sample data from multiple clinical studies, we tested the hypothesis that high-CBD cannabis use would increase eicosanoid levels compared with high-THC cannabis. Following cannabis use, high-CBD cannabis led to a rise in plasma eicosanoids, particularly lipoxins, while high-THC cannabis did not. CBD promoted anti-inflammatory eicosanoid production the 15-LOX pathway, therefore supporting the potential role of CBD as a therapeutic candidate for inflammatory diseases.

Echinorhynchids are a group of globally distributed acanthocephalan parasites mainly of freshwater, brackish and marine fishes and occasionally, reptiles and amphibians. During several parasitology surveys in the Gulf of Mexico and Northeast Pacific, Mexico, acanthocephalans were recovered from two marine fish species. The specimens from the Gulf of Mexico were identified as Caballerorhynchus lamothei (Cavisomidae), a typical parasite of the striped mojarra, whereas adult acanthocephalans from the Northeast Pacific, Mexico, from the Garibaldi fish exhibited morphological characteristics belonging to the family Transvenidae.

Non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (CCBs), including diltiazem and verapamil, inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), an enzyme involved in the metabolism of hydrocodone, the most commonly used opioid in the United States (US). This study evaluated whether concomitant use of hydrocodone with CYP3A4-inhibiting CCBs increases the risk of opioid overdose compared to use of hydrocodone with amlodipine, a CCB that does not inhibit CYP3A4. Using three US databases (2000-2021), two cohorts were identified: (1) hydrocodone initiation while on CCB; and (2) CCB initiation while on hydrocodone.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains one of the most prevalent and lethal cancers globally, making it critical to understand the mechanisms driving its progression and improve prognosis. Moreover, cuproptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction may be involved in lung cancer. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify mitochondrial genes associated with cuproptosis to develop a prognostic model for patients with LUAD, with the potential to predict survival outcomes and responses to treatment.
