Seeing something new or with new eyes?

Br J Haematol

September 2025

Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

When a new phenomenon is reported, despite many previous reports on larger cohorts of patients, one naturally asks why the finding is novel. Is this a new phenomenon, or merely identified because one is looking carefully for it for the first time? This commentary explores possible reasons for the novel finding of essential thrombocytopenia emerging in a cohort of Nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1)-mutated acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) patients. Commentary on: Bertoli et al.

The miniaturization of separation platforms marks a transformative shift in analytical science, merging microfabrication, automation, and intelligent data integration to meet rising demands for portability, sustainability, and precision. This review critically synthesizes recent technological advances reshaping the field-from microinjection and preconcentration modules to compact, high-sensitivity detection systems including ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis), fluorescence (FL), electrochemical detection (ECD), and mass spectrometry (MS). The integration of microcontrollers, AI-enhanced calibration routines, and IoT-enabled feedback loops has led to the rise of self-regulating analytical devices capable of real-time decision-making and autonomous operation.

Effectively evaluating and promoting pro-grazing practices necessitates the implementation of a verification system. To address this imperative, exploration of milk composition analysis as a means to assess grazing practices has garnered substantial attention. In this study, we used component predictions from milk Fourier-transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectra to construct an indicator to estimate the proportion of herbage consumed by dairy cows and another indicator to validate grazing.

Future Trends in Asymmetric Organo-Metal Combined Catalysis.

ACS Cent Sci

August 2025

Hefei National Research Center of Physical Sciences at the Microscale and Department of Chemistry, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China.

Asymmetric organo-metal combined catalysis, which integrates the catalytic functions of chiral organocatalysts and metal complexes, enables the enantioselective formation of challenging chemical bonds and facilitates cascade transformations, often without the need for intermediate purification. Since its inception in 2001, this paradigm has evolved into a versatile strategy for the rapid construction of molecular complexity with a high level of enantioselectivity. In this Outlook, we have highlighted the most recent contributions to this field, showcasing exciting opportunities to overcome current efficiency limits.
