Article Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to compare the clinical features in patients with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) caused by the three β-hemolytic streptococci (BHS): Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE).

Methods: Overall, 301 adult patients with STSS with S. pyogenes (32.9%), S. agalactiae (17.6%), and SDSE (49.5%) in Japan were enrolled between 2016 and 2021. Data were analyzed to identify differences in clinical characteristics among the three BHS. Bacterial isolates were examined for emm or capsular typing.

Results: The incidence of STSS with S. pyogenes declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, but STSS with S. agalactiae and SDSE did not. Patients with SDSE were the oldest (median age, 81 years; interquartile range, 70-88 years) followed by those with S. agalactiae (76 years; 67-85 years) and S. pyogenes (66 years; 58-78 years). The case fatality rates (CFRs) of STSS caused by the three BHS were not significantly different, ranging from 48-59%; however, the CFR significantly increased with age in patients with SDSE (P <0.05).

Conclusions: The characteristics of STSS differed among the three BHS. Clinicians should be aware of poor outcomes in patients with STSS, and provide appropriate treatment at an early stage.

Genomic and morphological characterization of a novel iridovirus, bivalve iridovirus 1 (BiIV1), infecting the common cockle ().

International Centre of Excellence for Aquatic Animal Health, The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Weymouth, DT4 8UB, UK.

High rates of mortality of the common cockle, , have occurred in the Wash Estuary, UK, since 2008. A previous study linked the mortalities to a novel genotype of , with a strong correlation between cockle moribundity and the presence of . Here, we characterize a novel iridovirus, identified by chance during metagenomic sequencing of a gradient purification of cells, with the presence also correlated to cockle moribundity.

Infection with the bacterium can cause melioidosis, a potentially life-threatening disease. As a facultative intracellular pathogen, it poses challenges for treatment and demands long-term follow-up. Neck abscesses caused by Burkholderia are rare, but it is essential to consider their possibility, as prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes and preventing complications.

A considerable number of individuals are diagnosed with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. In order to achieve a more complete understanding of the pathophysiology, it is essential to adopt a range of novel approaches and utilize new animal models. This study investigated changes in the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of ion-channels in a newly developed animal model of trigeminal neuropathic pain induced by cervical spinal dorsal horn compression.

Background: Despite advances in HIV care, viral load suppression (VLS) among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Uganda continue to lag behind that of adults, even with the introduction of dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens, the Youth and Adolescent Peer Supporter (YAPS) model, and community-based approaches. Understanding factors associated with HIV viral load non-suppression in this population is critical to inform HIV treatment policy. This study assessed the prevalence and predictors of viral load non-suppression among ALHIV aged 10-19 years on DTG-based ART in Soroti City, Uganda.

Physicochemical, microbiological, and microstructural changes in germinated wheat grain.

PLoS One

September 2025

Department of Science, LLP "Research and Production Enterprise "Innovator", Astana, Kazakhstan.

This study investigates the physicochemical, microbiological, and microstructural changes in soft wheat grain during germination under varying moisture conditions: moderately dry, moist, and wet. Pre-harvest sprouting can severely compromise grain quality and usability; however, understanding germination-induced changes offers insights into potential utilization strategies. Physical parameters-including thousand-kernel weight, test weight, and falling number-showed strong correlation with germination time, decreasing by 8.
