Article Abstract

The poultry cecum is considered the "gold standard" for detecting Salmonella in poultry because it has the largest concentration of Salmonella in the bird. The current study investigated alternative anatomical sampling locations for detecting Salmonella in preharvest turkeys. In this study, 36-day-old turkeys were challenged with a cocktail of Salmonella Heidelberg, S. Reading, and S. Infantis by oral gavage (N = 78). The birds were sampled on Day 0-, 6-, 9- and 12-days post-challenge. Across all serotypes, total Salmonella recovery from the different anatomical locations was significantly higher in samples taken from the cloaca, crop, vent feathers, and foot pad samples when compared to the cecal samples (P < 0.05). Similarly, Salmonella results for individual serotypes demonstrated a higher recovery of S. Reading and S. Infantis within the cloaca, and vent feathers samples compared to the ceca. Salmonella Heidelberg recovery was significantly higher in the joints, and bone marrow when compared to the cecal samples. Study results demonstrate that Salmonella can spread systemically in turkeys without demonstrated morbidity and can be recovered at other anatomical locations at higher rates than found in ceca. In addition, Salmonella serotypes translocated differently within the bird and can be recovered at different anatomical locations.

This study aimed to investigate the age-related alterations in mesial roots of mandibular first molar in terms of root canal curvature values, dentin thickness, interorifice distance, deviation from apical foramen, and location of apical foramen using a three-dimensional curvature measurement method and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Forty-five mesial roots of mandibular first molars from three age groups (Group 1: ≤ 30 years, Group 2: 31-59 years, Group 3: ≥ 60 years) were scanned using micro-CT. The central axis of each mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canal was analyzed using cubic B-spline curves to calculate canal curvature.

[Vascular anatomy and its variants in pancreatic surgery].

Chirurgie (Heidelb)

Klinik für Chirurgie, Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, Ratzeburgerallee 160, 23538, Lübeck, Deutschland.

A profound understanding of pancreatic anatomy and its vascular supply is essential for safely performing complex surgical procedures such as pancreaticoduodenectomy. Historically, anatomical exploration began with Herophilos and Ruphos of Ephesos in ancient times, evolving through major surgical innovations by Wirsung, Kausch and Whipple. The pancreas is located secondarily retroperitoneally and therefore has a close relationship of the pancreatic head to the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and portal vein (PV) and the celiac trunc.

To investigate the genetic determinants of fat distribution across anatomical sites and their implications for health outcomes. We analyzed neck-to-knee MRI data from the UK Biobank ( = 37,589) to measure fat at various locations and used Mendelian randomization to assess effects on 26 obesity-related diseases and 94 biomarkers from FinnGen and other consortia. We identified genetic loci associated with 10 fat depots: abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue ( = 2 loci), thigh subcutaneous adipose tissue (25), thigh intermuscular adipose tissue (15), visceral adipose tissue (7), liver proton density fat fraction (PDFF) (8), pancreas PDFF (11), paraspinal adipose tissue (9), pelvic bone marrow fat (28), thigh bone marrow fat (27), and vertebrae bone marrow fat (5).

Background: To investigate whether endovascular repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA), performed whenever anatomically feasible, would be superior in a real-world registry.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive RAAA patients treated at the emergency department of a single hospital from January 2011 to December 2023, after implementation of protocol-based care. The variables of interest were hemodynamic stability, proximal neck length, and type of intervention.

Background: High-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP) was recently added to the WHO 2021 CNS classification system among the group of circumscribed astrocytic gliomas. These tumors present with high-grade piloid histology with similarities to glioblastoma. HGAPs in the pineal region become particularly challenging due to its deep location and proximity to deep venous structures, the midbrain, and the thalamus.
