Over the past few decades, researchers have attempted to overcome the disadvantages of metallic stents. This led to the birth of the first "Bioresorbable Scaffold" (BRS) model, the Absorb Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS), in 1999 by Abbott. A stent that spontaneously resorbs shows a promising theoretical minimal risk of long-term stent thrombosis and omits the need for long-term antiplatelet therapy.

Introduction: Symptomatic infrapopliteal arterial disease often requires challenging endovascular interventions. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stent placement to settle residual stenosis or dissections remains the standard of care for infrapopliteal endovascular intervention. Concerns have been raised about permanent artery rigidification by stainless steel stents.

In hallux valgus surgery, hardware removal is necessary in about 10% of the patients due to pain, bone resorption, implant loosening, or the psychological demand for implant removal. The secondary and imaging interferences in case of permanent metallic implants have promoted the development and clinical introduction of bioabsorbable fixation implants including polymeric, resorabable metallic, and biologic materials. Due to inferior rigidity, hardness and absolute mechanical strength compared to metallic materials, uncertain degradation times and inflammatory tissue responses, further development and clinical research has let to newer generations of resorbable implants.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes, safety, and clinical applications of bioabsorbable magnesium-based materials for fixation in bone surgeries. The review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. An initial search was performed on electronic databases, followed by manual and reference searches.
