Background: Decathlon is a multimodality sport that requires the combination of endurance, strength, speed, and agility. A polymorphism present in the gene encoding for alpha-actinin-3 () potentially influences sports performance, since this protein is a structural component of skeletal muscle contributing to muscle contraction effectiveness.
Aim: To investigate whether the presence of the polymorphism is associated with decathlon athletes' performance in the different modalities of decathlon.
Methods: Thirty-one male athletes from the Brazilian national federation of decathlon aged between 18 and 50 years were genotyped for the polymorphism using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The athletes' latest decathlon performances were recorded over ten competitions. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was verified. Pearson's correlation coefficient was utilized to assess the relationship between the obtained sports performance (score) by event and sets of events (speed events, jumps, and throws) with significance considered at < 0.05.
Results: Strong and significant correlations were identified between the speed events, the jumping, and the launching performances. Among the athletes, the distribution of genotypes was as follows: -51.6%, -48.4%, and -0%, indicating a complete absence of homozygosity for the non-functional allele in this cohort. No significant differences in sports performance (score) could be observed based on the genotype.
Conclusions: Our results may support the importance of the genotype, specifically, the presence of the allele, as one of the contributive factors for athletes' performance in modalities that involve muscle strength, power, and speed. However, given the small sample size and the retrospective nature of this study, further research is warranted.

High-altitude training is widely adopted by endurance athletes with the aim of increasing total haemoglobin mass (tHb) and thereby endurance exercise performance. However, divergent effects on tHb and exercise performance have been reported in athletes commencing altitude camps with initial high baseline levels for tHb, questioning the efficacy of in-season interventions in elite athletes. Therefore, haematological adaptations and exercise performance were evaluated in 12 elite cyclists completing an in-season 'Live High-Train High' (LHTH) altitude camp (21 days at 3000 m) immediately after participating in the national championships.

Bone stress injury is a common musculoskeletal condition presenting with insidious bony pain that is progressive and occurs with a number of intrinsic or extrinsic risk factors, particularly with a recent change in training. When elicited, the presence of bony tenderness remains the most important component of the physical exam, although reproduction at deeper sites is a challenge and requires a high index of suspicion and imaging for diagnosis. MRI should be utilized as the gold standard for diagnosis, grading, and return-to-sport timing prognosis when available, with plain radiographs used as first-line imaging.

This study aimed to investigate the acute changes in the passive stiffness of biarticular hamstring muscles after passive stretching and eccentric-only resistance exercise performed at different loads. Thirteen healthy young male participants performed four exercise sessions (on separate days) that comprised passive knee extension (0% of maximal eccentric torque) and eccentric-only knee flexion at different loads (25%, 50% and 75%). Maximal knee joint range of motion, passive torque, shear moduli of the biarticular hamstring muscles, and maximal isometric torque were measured before, 5 min, and 30 min after completing each session.
