Toward ecological forecasting of West Nile virus in Florida: Insights from two decades of sentinel chicken surveillance.

Sci Total Environ

West Nile Virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, yet transmission activity remains difficult to predict. The present study used 20 years of digitized WNV seroconversion data from 526 sentinel chicken coops across Florida to develop spatiotemporal models with landscape and climate variables to predict WNV seroconversion at monthly and seasonal timescales. We found several environmental predictors hypothesized to impact WNV transmission were important at both timescales.

Objective: The risk of lymph node metastasis significantly influences the choice of surgical strategy for patients with early-stage endometrial cancer. While sentinel lymph node dissection can be considered in clinically early-stage endometrial cancer, lymph node evaluation might be omitted in patients with very low risk of lymph node metastasis. This study aims to develop a predicting model for lymph node metastasis in these patients, identifying potential metastases as thoroughly as possible to provide clinicians with a preoperative reference that helps in decisions about surgical procedures and treatments.

Purpose: To define the genetic architecture of foveal morphology and explore its relevance to foveal hypoplasia (FH), a hallmark of developmental macular disorders.

Methods: We applied deep-learning algorithms to quantify foveal pit depth from central optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans in 61,269 UK Biobank participants. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using REGENIE, adjusting for age, sex, height, and ancestry.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) relevant to osteoporosis have identified hundreds of loci; however, understanding how these variants influence the phenotype is complicated because most reside in non-coding DNA sequence that serves as transcriptional enhancers and repressors. To advance knowledge on these regulatory elements in osteoclasts (OCs), we performed Micro-C analysis, which informs on the genome topology of these cells and integrated the results with transcriptome and GWAS data to further define loci linked to BMD. Using blood cells isolated from 4 healthy participants aged 31-61 yr, we cultured OC in vitro and generated a Micro-C chromatin conformation capture dataset.

Integrative physiology of skeletal muscle for maintaining cognitive health.

J Physiol

September 2025

Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA.

Cognitive decline and physical impairment are often linked with ageing, contributing to declines in health span and loss of independence in older adults. Pathological cognitive decline with age is largely considered to be a brain-centric challenge. However, recent findings have begun to challenge this paradigm as the health of peripheral systems, namely skeletal muscle, predict cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
