Centre de Référence Anomalies du Développement et Syndromes Malformatifs Est, Hôpital d'Enfants, CHU Dijon Bourgogne, Dijon, France; Inserm UMR1231 GAD, Génétique des Anomalies du Développement, Université de Bourgogne, Dijon, France; Fédération Hospitalo-Universitaire Médecine Translatio

Scientific advances in genomics are transforming healthcare and prevention. However, they also increase situations of uncertainty, which in turn increase vulnerability not only for patients and their families but also for professionals. Cardiogenetics plays a crucial role in preventing sudden death in young individuals, but it can pose complex challenges for healthcare teams.

Introduction: Inequities in clinical care may contribute to racial disparities observed in studies of heart disease morbidity and cardiogenetic testing outcomes. There is a lack of research aimed at understanding the complexity of those inequities, but stigma likely contributes. This qualitative exploratory study helps close that gap in the literature by describing intersectional stigma manifestations perceived by the Black cardiomyopathy patient population at one academic medical center.

With the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSCs) a wide range of cell types, including iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CM), can now be generated from an unlimited source of somatic cells. These iPSC-CM are used for different purposes such as disease modelling, drug discovery, cardiotoxicity testing and personalised medicine. The 2D iPSC-CM models have shown promising results, but they are known to be more immature compared to in vivo adult cardiomyocytes.

December 2023

Center of Research on Psychological disorders and Somatic diseases; Department of Medical & Clinical Psychology, Tilburg University, Tilburg, the Netherlands.

Current clinical practice regarding inherited cardiac conditions has a biomedical focus, while psychological and social expertize and capacity are often lacking. As patient-centered care entails a multidisciplinary approach, the present study (a) explores barriers and facilitators of implementing patient-centered care in cardiogenetics and (b) contrasts various stakeholder viewpoints and perceived influence. We performed a three-round modified Delphi study using the input of a virtual expert panel comprising 25 medical professionals, 9 psychosocial professionals working in cardiogenetics, and 6 patient representatives.
