Landau theory relates phase transitions to the minimization of the Landau functional (e.g., free energy functional), which is expressed as a power series of the order parameter. It has been shown that the critical behavior of certain physical systems can be described using Landau functionals that include nonanalytic terms, corresponding to odd or even noninteger powers of the absolute value of the order parameter. In particular, these nonanalytic terms can determine the order of the phase transition and the values of the critical exponents. Here, we show that such terms can also shape the finite-size scaling behavior of fluctuations of observables (e.g., of energy or magnetization) or the response functions (e.g., heat capacity or magnetic susceptibility) at the continuous phase transition point. We demonstrate this on two examples, the equilibrium molecular zipper and the nonequilibrium version of the Curie-Weiss model.

Introduction: Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) is a subtype of epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave activation during sleep (EESWAS), characterized by acquired aphasia associated with the emergence of epileptiform abnormalities.
Patients And Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in a tertiary hospital, involving one group of children with LKS and another with EESWAS. The aim was to compare the clinical, neurophysiological, and neuropsychological aspects of both groups.

The distribution of tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) shows remarkable inter-individual heterogeneity, including hemispheric asymmetry. However, the factors driving this asymmetry remain poorly understood. Here we explore whether tau asymmetry is linked to i) reduced inter-hemispheric brain connectivity (potentially restricting tau spread), or ii) asymmetry in amyloid-beta (Aβ) distribution (indicating greater hemisphere-specific vulnerability to AD pathology).

Bent-core nematic liquid crystals exhibit unique properties, including giant flexoelectricity and polar electro-optic responses, making them ideal for energy conversion and electro-optic applications. When confined in nanopores, they can stabilize chiral nanostructures, enhance polar order, and enable defect-driven switching - offering potential in nanofluidics, sensing, and adaptive optics. The thermotropic ordering of the bent-core dimer CB7CB confined in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and silica membranes with precisely engineered cylindrical nanochannels - ranging from just a few nanometers to several hundred nanometers-is examined.

Landscape connectivity is often negatively impacted by road networks that fragment habitat and result in genetic and demographic consequences for wildlife. Existing roadway structures like bridges, culverts, and underpasses can facilitate connectivity and reduce the barrier effect of roads by providing less risky areas for animals to cross. Estimating areas of high wildlife movement near roads is beneficial for prioritizing transportation investments for wildlife.

The negative impacts of pesticides on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and human health are broadly documented and numerous policies have been proposed to reduce their use and associated risks. A key challenge is to provide relevant metrics of pesticide use that account for toxicity variation between pesticides to inform public policy.
