Herein, by the pyrolysis and alkali leaching of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)@SiO, followed by Fe and Co doping, a novel FeCo/NC nanozyme, with adjacent Fe and Co dual-atom pairs decorated on an N-doped carbon support, is exactly built. Due to the synergistic effect of adjacent Fe and Co dual-atom pairs, the peroxidase-like activity of FeCo/NC is significantly enhanced, far exceeding those of Fe/NC and Co/NC. Based on this, we propose a simple colorimetric electronic tongue consisting of FeCo/NC, chromogenic substrates (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine) (TMB), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and -phenylenediamine (OPD) and HO to identify seven active substances in licorice. The mechanism of action of this tongue is that different active substances have differential degrees of inhibition on the three nanozyme-catalyzed reactions (FeCo/NC-TMB-HO, FeCo/NC-ABTS-HO, and FeCo/NC-OPD-HO). The collected absorbance variation data, i.e., the colorimetric fingerprint patterns, are analyzed by linear discriminant analysis, realizing the identification of the seven active substances with 100% accuracy. This work provides insights into the rational design of dual-atom catalysts with nanozyme activities for the discrimination of multiple targets.

The strong C-F bond found in per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) makes them resistant to degradation and thus persistent in the environment. One of the most common methods for quantifying PFAS in environmental matrices is to use tandem mass spectrometry. However, the dissociation of ions made by deprotonating PFAS alcohols and acids has only been qualitatively explored.

Cannabis use is common among US youth who become involved in the juvenile legal system (JLS), yet substance use treatment rates remain low, particularly among youth diverted away from formal JLS involvement. Diverted youth encounter multiple barriers to receiving services in the community that could be addressed via digital approaches offered by the JLS. This multiphase work details development of the TECH (Teen Empowerment through Computerized Health) app, a tailored digital adjunct to usual JLS services.

Currently, there is an increasing use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) studies to investigate the molecular taxonomy, metabolic properties, enzyme capabilities, and bioactive substances of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species. In this study, the genome of strain Pediococcus pentosaceus BBS1 was sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq. 2500 platform to determine its classification, annotate its main features, and evaluate its safety characteristics.

Microbial spoilage and oxidation are significant causes of food deterioration, contributing to food waste of up to 30%. To mitigate these losses, active food packaging is an effective solution. Considering the excellent properties of nanofibers produced by electrospinning, integrating active food packaging functionality with nanofiber technology offers an ideal approach enhancing preservation.

Large-scale geological processes shape microbial habitats and drive the evolution of life on Earth. During the Oligocene, convergence between Africa and Europe led to the opening of the Western Mediterranean Basin, a deep-ocean system characterized by fluid venting, oxygen depletion, and the absence of benthic fauna. In this extreme, inhospitable seafloor environment, fusiform objects known as Tubotomaculum formed, whose origin has long remained controversial.
