Article Abstract

A podophage, Moonfish, was isolated from a longhorn cattle ranch in Barry County, MI, USA. The 69,166-bp genome was annotated and places Moonfish in a similar category to N4-like phages. Host range studies show that Moonfish has a narrow host profile relative to similar phages.

The triple burden of malnutrition is an incessant issue in low- and middle-income countries, and fish has the potential to mitigate this burden. In Ghana fish is a central part of the diet, but data on nutrients and contaminants in processed indigenous fish species, that are often eaten whole, are missing. Samples of smoked, dried or salted Engraulis encrasicolus (European anchovy), Brachydeuterus auritus (bigeye grunt), Sardinella aurita (round sardinella), Selene dorsalis (African moonfish), Sierrathrissa leonensis (West African (WA) pygmy herring) and Tilapia spp.

Community ecology of the metazoan parasites of Atlantic moonfish, Selene setapinnis (Osteichthyes: Carangidae) from the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Curso de Pós-graduação em Biologia Animal, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, CEP 23851-970 Scropédica, RJ, Brazil.

Eighty-nine specimens of Selene setapinnis (Mitchill, 1815) collected from the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro (21-23 degrees S, 41-45 degrees W and 23 degrees 05'S, 44 degrees 30'W), Brazil, from August 2001 to May 2002, were necropsied to study their metazoan parasites. Eighty-one (91%) specimens of S. setapinnis were parasitized by one or more metazoan species.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study aimed to clarify the evolutionary relationships among higher teleost fish (Acanthomorpha), which comprise over 60% of all fish species, using extensive molecular data.
  • Researchers analyzed three different types of genetic sequences: mitochondrial ribosomal fragments, nuclear ribosomal sequences, and a protein-coding gene, gathering data from a wide range of fish taxa.
  • The results revealed several new, reliable clades among acanthomorph fishes, outlining key relationships between various fish groups, such as the connection between cods and dories, and groupings of needlefishes with silversides and other notable pairings.
