Although bronchial artery embolization (BAE) initially emerged as a critical minimally invasive image-guided procedure to manage massive hemoptysis regardless of underlying etiologies, there has been a growing interest in BAE to treat pulmonary malignancies within recent years. This article provides an in-depth exploration of bronchial artery anatomy, pathologies, imaging modalities in guiding effective BAE, and procedural pearls for successful intervention. The complexity of bronchial artery anatomy, including its variations and potential complications during embolization, necessitates thorough understanding and precise procedural techniques to optimize patient outcomes and minimize risks.

Hemoptysis, defined as the expectoration of blood originating from the lower respiratory tract, is a clinical symptom with a wide differential diagnosis that ranges from benign to life-threatening causes. Common causes vary by geographic region and care setting, with respiratory infections, malignancy, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease being predominant in resource-rich countries and tuberculosis remaining the leading cause in resource-limited areas. Though most cases are mild and self-limited, hemoptysis can be a life-threatening medical emergency; these cases are associated with a mortality exceeding 50%, primarily due to asphyxia.

We previously demonstrated the CFTR correctors VX-445 (elexacaftor) and S-VX-121 (vanzacaftor) potentiate heterologously-expressed BK channels, as well as in primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEs). This potentiation of BK resulted in altered vasoreactivity and neuronal excitability. We postulated novel compounds could be identified that would potentiate BK while not affecting CFTR.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), especially with long-term immunosuppressive therapy, significantly increases susceptibility to opportunistic infections, including fungal pathogens such as species. These patients are also at heightened risk for a broad range of opportunistic infections, such as species, viral infections such as herpes zoster and cytomegalovirus (CMV), , and pneumonia (PJP).
