Article Abstract

Objective: To assess whether there is an association between total prescribed dosage of resistance exercise (volume, frequency, intensity, and duration) and change in pain and physical function in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Method: A systematic review with meta-regression was conducted, searching MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials until December 11, 2024. We included randomised controlled trials that compared resistance exercise for knee OA with non-exercise interventions. Meta-regression examined the association between total prescribed exercise dosage (volume × frequency × intensity × duration of the intervention) and standardised mean differences (SMDs) for change in pain and physical function. Covariates were included to attempt to reduce between-study heterogeneity.

Results: Analysis of 14 trials (N = 1274) found no association between total prescribed resistance exercise dosage and changes in pain (slope coefficient: < 0.01 on a 0-100 scale [95% CI: < - 0.01 to < 0.01]; p = 0.18) or physical function (slope coefficient: < 0.01 on a 0-100 scale [95% CI: < - 0.01 to < 0.01]; p = 0.15). Heterogeneity was substantial (I = 73%-97%) and many trials were of unclear/high risk of bias.

Conclusion: No association was found between the total prescribed dosage of resistance exercise and changes in pain or function in individuals with knee OA. However, due to the limited number of trials, high heterogeneity, and overall low quality of studies, findings should be interpreted with caution.

Introduction: Submarine environments pose unique challenges to maintaining physical activity and exercise routines due to confined spaces, demanding schedules, and limited resources. This study investigated submariners' physical activity patterns, sleep quality, and perceived exercise barriers in both land- and sea-based settings, with the goal of informing targeted health interventions.

Materials And Methods: Ethics approval was granted by the Defence Science and Technology Group and Edith Cowan University review panels.

Muscle metaboreflex is activated in limb skeletal muscles during high-intensity exercise that increases respiratory demand, but its effects on respiratory muscle blood flow remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether metaboreflex activation in the forearm alters blood flow in the intercostal muscles. Sixteen healthy young male subjects performed isometric handgrip at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction for 2 minutes, followed by either post-exercise muscle ischemia (PEMI; metaboreflex activation condition) or a control recovery.

It is essential to master the techniques of tendon transfer and to know the indications, so as to be able to treat tendinopathy, tendon tear or static deformity in the foot and ankle. The type of transfer depends on the pathology, with the aim of reconstructing or supplementing the affected muscle. Complete clinical and paraclinical assessment is needed to determine feasibility and draw up the preoperative plan according to axial deformity and associated retraction.

Impacts of aerobic exercise and whole-body vibration interventions on myokines and neurocognitive performance in postmenopausal women.

Institute of Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan; Department of Psychology, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. Electronic address:

This study investigated the effects of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE) and MIAE combined with isometric resistance exercise on a whole-body vibration (WBV) platform (MIAE+WBV) compared with the effects of no exercise (NEI) on neurocognitive and molecular indices in 71 sedentary, healthy postmenopausal women. Participants were randomly assigned to MIAE (n=23), MIAE+WBV (n=23), and NEI (n=25) groups. Neurocognitive measures, including accuracy rate (AR), reaction time (RT), and electroencephalogram-based event-related potentials (P2, N2, and P3 components) during the Stroop task, in addition to serum levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), norepinephrine (NE), osteocalcin (OC), carboxylated OC (cOC), and uncarboxylated OC (ucOC), were evaluated before and after the intervention.

From inflammation to intervention: exploring shared mechanisms and lifestyle strategies in diabetes mellitus and multiple sclerosis.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and multiple sclerosis (MS), while affecting metabolic and neurological systems respectively, share convergent immunometabolic pathways. This review synthesizes recent evidence elucidating overlapping mechanisms linking DM and MS, emphasizing metabolic dysfunction and systemic inflammation, with therapeutic potential of lifestyle interventions alongside pharmacotherapy. A comprehensive literature analysis examined shared pathogenesis through recent studies.
