Article Abstract

Objective: This study aims to identify early warning indicators of COVID-19 severity by integrating modern medical biomarkers with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) tongue features.

Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 409 hospitalized COVID-19 patients from two centers in China. Patients were stratified into severe ( = 50) and non-severe ( = 359) groups based on the 10th edition of China's diagnostic guidelines. Data included demographics, clinical symptoms, tongue characteristics, and laboratory parameters. Univariate analyses (chi-square/Fisher's exact tests) and stepwise logistic regression were performed to identify key predictors.

Results: Age ( < 0.001), fever ( < 0.001), elevated procalcitonin (PCT,  < 0.001), thick tongue fur ( = 0.003), and fat tongue shape ( = 0.002) were significant predictors of severity. The combined model integrating these factors demonstrated superior predictive performance (Nagelkerke  = 0.741).

Conclusion: Integrating TCM tongue features (thick fur and fat shape) with clinical biomarkers (age, fever, and PCT) enhances early identification of severe COVID-19, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Objective: Sepsis is a common and life-threatening syndrome in intensive care units, frequently accompanied by myocardial dysfunction, which significantly worsens patient outcomes. S100A12, a calcium-binding protein associated with inflammation, is upregulated in various inflammatory conditions. However, its role in sepsis and related cardiac injury remains unclear.

Background: Brucellosis is a zoonotic and multisystemic disease that is widespread worldwide and can present with many different clinical conditions, ranging from asymptomatic to serious and fatal conditions. Brucellosis may be linked to renal tubular and acute kidney damage, nephrotic syndrome, and various types of nephropathies.

Objective: Our research was carried out prospectively to investigate the relationship between brucellosis and various biochemical markers and particularly to investigate the role of renal tubular damage biomarkers.

The presence of internal cracks in rocks within underground engineering environments has significantly compromised their stability, and groundwater has substantially influenced the mechanical properties and fracture evolution of rock masses. In this study, sandstone specimens containing three parallel cracks under saturated water conditions were investigated. Using uniaxial compression tests and digital image correlation (DIC) technology, the influence of the inclination angles of the three parallel cracks on the mechanical properties and fracture evolution of rocks under saturated water conditions was examined.

Background: Effective risk communication is essential in managing cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of global mortality. Clear communication between patients and physicians supports informed decision-making, yet comprehension gaps persist. We aimed to assess the quality of risk communication during hospital admissions for cardiovascular events, from patient and physician perspectives, and identify discrepancies in risk perception and associated factors.
