Introduction: Knockout of the Fmo5 gene in mice led to a lean, slow-ageing phenotype characterised by the presence of 2,3-butanediol isomers in their urine and plasma. Oral treatment of wildtype mice with 2,3-butanediol led to a low cholesterol, low epididymal fat phenotype.
Objectives: Determine if significant, heterozygous coding variations in human FMO5 would give rise to similar clinical and metabolic phenotypes in humans, as in C57BL/6J mice with knockout of the Fmo5 gene and in particular, increased excretion of 2,3-butanediol.

Through high-pressure diamond anvil cell experiments, we report the synthesis of two novel potassium superhydrides (KH-I and KH-II) and investigate their structural and vibrational properties via synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Above 17 GPa at room temperature, KH-II and H react to form KH-I; this reaction can be accelerated with temperature. KH-I possesses a face-centered-cubic () potassium sublattice with a slight rhombohedral distortion (space group 3̅).

The development of the microstructure during polymeric spinodal decomposition can be monitored in real time using small-angle scattering. Information about the microstructure can be deduced from measurements of the structure factor-a quantity directly proportional to the scattered intensity. While the time evolution of the structure factor can be measured relatively easily, modeling it has proved to be much more difficult.
